| It will fly!!! |
My car, I had to pay for all gas, repairs, insurance, and license. Kids today, a lot of them don't even have to come up with gas money. Mommy and Daddy just give it to them. I still remember that car fondly. I can also remember working all weekend on it to keep it running so that I could drive to school on Monday morning. It gave me a real appreciation of what I had. OK, off my soap box. Continue what you were doing.

I started flying CL when I was 11, and RC when I was 14. 99% was paid for by money I made cutting grass and summer work. My first RC plane I bought myself, but did not have enough money for a radio ($275 back in '73). I was building my plane in the basement, and my dad happened to find it when it was about 75% completed. He asked me how I was going to afford a radio, and I told him I was going to save up for it (a long time!!!). He gave me half the money towards that radio. I was very grateful, but that was the only help I got the whole time I have been in the hobby. He told me on more than one occasion that I was wasting my money. In all the years I have flown, I think he has only gone to the field to watch maybe three times, even when I was flying (and winning) in competition. My son became interested a little over a year ago (he is 12 now). He is really good, and will be better than I ever was. We have the most fun together, and he really enjoys the time spent at the flying field. We belong to a great club (RDRC). He has not had to spend much of his own money, but he did buy a Sypher and all the accesories with his own money. Built most of it himself. I can think of a lot of things my son could be doing instead of flying RC, but I don't think any other recreational activity can compare. I hope he never loses interest. And I don't mind spending the money or the time to support him. I am so thankful that we have a hobby that we can share. I am very lucky that my parents support me in this hobby. VERY lucky. They mainly do it because they would rather me be flying over the weekends instead of doing other things that could get me into trouble. I do though pay for a lot of my small airplanes. I am also saving up for a 102 inch Yak.

I also need to comment on another thing you said. You state everything in this hobby is overpriced. That is not true. Do you have any idea how much money a company has to put into producing a product? Now for the last time, quite whinning about what others have, or what you don't have, and start enjoying what you do have. I can't believe that you are friends with Tristine Kline, then state on a public forum that he begs for stuff. Not much of a friend are you? I am glad you posted a picture of yourself. Since we live fairly close, it is possible that we could run into each other at a contest someday. I will make sure I avoid you at all costs. I can't stand whinners. Mike Darr | ||||||||||||||||||

I think that I should chime in here. I got about 30 bucks for my first RC and had to save the rest myself. I got it just because they knew that I wasn't able to get the rest and it was late august and by september I wanted to fly. I was asking myself why don't they give me any money?? And I realised it. When you're young you are interested in all sorts of stuff and even if you get something you play with it for a while and then just lose interest. That's what my parents thought. It's been nearly 10 years since I played with my first rubber powered planes. And my parents see that I will be involved with this hobby longer. As others mentioned you should look from the other -their perspective. Although they don't fund the hobby they had given me what I have and made me such a person I am. The pay for my university which is 250 miles away and I stopped complaining. Right now I am designing a 50cc plane and will probably buy myself a da 50 this summer. Will have to leave the servos and other stuff for next season. And I have to swap my receiver -a brand new Futaba 149DP, but for 72MHz, which is illegal here |

I think the fact these guys are teenagers is being overlooked. At that age myself and all the other guys I hung out with figured the world owed us something too. Then you get into the work force, pay bills, put food on the table and realize the world doesn't owe you or even care. Some kids get whatever they want, they are called spoiled and it always ends up bitting them in the ass.
