Hey guys, I am wondering, between us teens, how much your parents support you in this hobby? I mean I so many 16 year old guys that have 35% ers, how the heck do you guys afford that!?! I've in the hobby for 4 years, 2 years r\c and no where I've I ever thought of even being able to afford a big plane. On top of food, my daily expenses, I've only got a few bucks left to save up. Do your parents like pay it for you completely. I've got 2 seperate jobs that I work, and it's just enough to squeeze by sometimes. Now for the first time I can get a 50cc plane but won't get an engine for it till the month of august, and then theres all the radio compartments i'll need to get for it... . I don't even know if I should get this... but the feel of having a big plane is pretty sweet though. The only reason though that I can afford this is that the school is giving me a 2 weeks work experience, so thats where the money is coming from...How often do they help you out to get to the feild? Or even stay and watch you fly, and see what you can do. Mine are all like, ill take you to the feild but you'll need to find another way back, or vice versa. If I do get a ride over and back, which I am very lucky to get every 2 months, they start bit%^&g and say thats all I get from them for the next while... How about you guys? Thanks LeBlanc |

LeBlanc, Sorry to hear that dude. I am 33 and my father helps me out all the time. Not so much with money to buy stuff but we always go to events together. Being a parent myself I am sure that your parents are good parents its hard sometimes being there with bills and jobs and stuff. Really hard. Hang in there and dont give up hope. Remeber though (here is the parent in me) dotn slack on school and stuff the reason we can all afford this hobby is because of the jobs we have. In due time you will be on your own and be able to afford all of the "toys" but first get an education then the toys.... Good luck and i wish you well.... Rodney |

Im not compromising for school whatsoever, I will skip work if I have homework to do thats for sure and my parents don't need to tell me that, just seems like everyone has support, I have to teach myself everything, and that included flying. Kinda sucks to think of it... Oh well.

I started flying CL when I was about 6 and RC when I was 10. Obviously both were with the help of my parents..... However.... I had a serious racing addiction. By 11 I was racing 428 all over the south... I had a #1 airplane and a #2, plus a 3rd backup engine....... I paid for at least half of it always (mowed a heckuvalotta lawns). My parents were generous to cough up the other half(but I had to earn the first half) and Dad traveled with me to the races. I miss those roadtripping weekends, driving to Birmingham or Nashville or wherever with Dad. Genuinely some of the most fun I've had in my lifetime....... Giantscale is an awesome part of this hobby, but by no means the only part. There is nothing wrong with flying a .40 size profile (many of them fly better than some giant scale birds anyway) or something else you can afford. I guess what I'm getting at is: earn your keep, and learn to fly the heck out of whatever it is.... Edit - just realized this is the teen forum.... sorry if I tripped into your thread....

....Alex, my Dad said he would never let me fail. My parents did encourage my interests, but ultimately I flourished when I was outside my comfort zone and left alone to persevere. I beleive the things you want will come in all due time. Don't rush it. Your life is but a blip in comparison to what you have yet to experiece. Don't be too rough on yourself either. I can tell you I have had one storeyed life to get where I am now. You want it bad enough? I know your working and going to school. Thats all you can ask of yourself. If it is any consolation you have way more electric stuff than I would have or could have imagined at that age! Maybe times were simpler when I was your age. I just didn't really think of all these things, Hell I guess I was too busy trying to get the attention of some girl. That and I only made $5.00 Per hour so there was just no chance for a plane or HER. Keep your head up. .................you coming to work tommorro? | ||||||||||||||||||

My parents drive and go to all the events I fly in to support me. However, the whole thing is funded entirely by me. That's why the only plane I have that isn't a foamy is only a Katana Mini.

My parents are great, I couldn't ask more from them. When I first started flying I worked all summer and bought a H9 Arrow trainer, its still one of my favorite planes. My mom and dad would take me to the feild every weekend and now let me dive there every weekend. All the older men at my club said I was really good and a fast learner, but said I needed to see kyle fly. One day I was flying my 2nd plane, a H9 twist, when a kid pulled up with a plane I thought you could ride in. I was amazed at what he could do with his carden. I talked to him and found out about IMAC. He said that I should come to contest to see what it was all about. I went with my dad and I was shocked to see so many big planes, I was hooked. I got to talk to all the pilots and found out why they all enjoy the hobby so much. I took tons of photos, since that was I also enjoy to do, of the freestyle and did some after hours fun. The next year I knew I had to do IMAC, I looked and looked for months trying to find the perfect plane. I found one, it was a KMP yak 54. I was all I wanted, not too big, cost only $1200, and was local. My parents bought the plane for me 100%. I did well with IMAC last year with my yak and even won a few contests. Both of my parents work alot(too much if you ask me) and I would be excited for an upcoming contest, not just for the flying, but for the long drives and the hours we would be together looking at the countryside as we traveled down the interstate. This year I'm 100% focused on the IMAC flying. I found out that the IMAC plane to have is the carden 40% 330s. Thats what I'm shooting for baby! I am going to fly advance this year with that plane. Now thats a lotta green stuff for one of those. So my parents said they'll do a 50/50 for me. So I'm looking of a job and to get the cash before the season starts. This is a great hobby, and for some, we make it into our sport, our lifestyle. It's something that brings us all together, and charish till we are no more. |

I dont have any great wisdom to pass on but you are in a better situation than many kids; there are still more kids that may be in better situation than you. Best thing is to get a moderately sized plane that you can aford to replace in a shorter amount of time. At any given time your plane can and will eventuslly crash and you will be out a plane to fly for a long period of time because you went to large to start with. When you grad hopefully from coll you will be able to get any thing ya want. Like The Tank has said he is his own best sponsor.
