I guess I am lucky. My wife understands the hobby, likes the fact that I have something in common with my son now (he started flying 2 years ago), and has a good idea where I am when I am not at home.

When I started dating her, the first argument we ever had was about flying. She wanted to spend the afternoon at the mall, and I wanted to go flying. I told her we could go to the mall on weeknights, but weekends were for flying!!

Not long after that, I was working on a new plane I designed, and was spending a lot of time on it. She was a little upset I was not spending time with her, so I painted her name on the side of the plane hoping that would make her less mad at me. I won a couple of competition fun-flys with it and then everyone knew her name. All of a sudden, she enjoyed going to the flying field with me. I had not planned to actually name the plane after her, but everyone started calling it the "Miss Martha" so that is how that plane got its name.

She often helps out at the field whenever we have a flyin. In fact, she will probably be helping with registration and concessions at the RDRC Fly-For-Tots on Sept 15-16. (Shameless plug for the event!!!)

I didn't realize that you were married to my wife. Funny that we have never met.

Actually, the one problem my wife has with this hobby is when we attend multi day flying meets with friends and their wives. The women are always wanting to go to the mall, and my wife wants to be at the field. She winds up with a conflict of interest because she doesnt want to snub her friends.

Weekends spent flying at our favorite club field (2 hours drive time so we overnite) provide plenty of opportunity for good dinners and wine.

Oh, and when I trash a plane (its been a bad year), while I'm still grieving, she's campaigning for a replacement.

She's been on a buddy box for years (and I am guessing will remain so), but enjoys flying her trainers around (but she won't clean them)!

Girl:
"I see by your Carden Aircraft shirt you must be a pilot?"

Me:
Yes, ma'am I am.

Girl:
"What kind of plane do you fly?"

Me:
High performance aerobatic aircraft in front of many spectators.

Girl:
"So you are an air show performer?"

Me:
Sort of, yes.

Girl:
"Can I come to the airport and watch your next airshow?"

Me:
No!.........end of encounter

Always a matter of time before the questions become too specfic requiring specific answers!
