That's the best job in the world for an aspiring pro-pilot. You will learn who to go that extra mile for in return for flight time. Be cool, don't nag guys about flying with them. I got all of my pre-airline jobs from doing line service and just knowing the right people, the flying jobs will get handed to you....if you do it right.

Plus it's a fun job.

I have been working as a line service person for a number for years. I am based out of Toronto, Pearson Airport. This FBO (Fixed Based Operations) is one of the busiest within North America and is regarded as having one of the best services. It is a lot of work and it keeps me busy, (more so in the winter time). I cannot think being in any other job. It is fast paste, lots of fun and is different every day. The company has always looked after me. I always like to do a little extra from my customers where I can. I hope most of the corporate pilots who have flown into Toronto, Pearson and who are reading this, agrees with me.

I'm hoping to get a job as a lineman at the local airport this spring. Any tips or suggestions on how to go about it? I was just kind of planning on maybe calling ahead and/or just going there and asking whoever's in charge if there was a job available. Not really sure how those things are handled though. Also, how much have you/are you guys getting an hour for these jobs?

Thanks

My first job back in High School was being a lineman at our local airport. It was one of the best jobs I have had. Getting paid to be around airplanes, can't beat that. I was able to get in good with the head mechanic and convinced him he needed help on test flights.

I was in 11th grade and wanted to do youth apprenticeship in 12th grade so in the spring of my 11th grade year I went to the airport and they were in the process of hiring a new airport manager so i had to go to the city office. I went down there and spoke with the HR department Manager and he told me he would look into the program. In August before school started I gave them a call and got it approved. They were in need of a part time lineman anyway. So I work 3-4 hours a day after my 3rd period class every day. Get paid VERY well also. I am not busy now because there is really nothing to do at the airport now. But in the fall I was very busy with runway maintance.
The other lineman was a drop out in high school and this is his main job at age 22 or so. He does a great job being one but he is basically a supervisor for me because he has been there a couple of months longer. The airport manager is a great guy and we always joke around alot.

sukoikid, that is great you are doing this job. I did it while I went to college to study for my A & P and doing my flight training. It is a great learning environment and you can observe many things while working at an airport. If you plan to go further in aviation you are now getting a good foundation. Make the most of it and then move on to other ambitions if you so desire. For me, it was just a 3 year job before doing flight instruction full time, then I was off to the airlines where I am today.

I was a lineman back in high school, in fact that's how I earned most of my private pilot certificate. I also did it in college. We had a P-51 in the hanger, and since I worked the night shift (read: dead), I am not ashamed to say I spent a LOT of time sitting in it, making airplane noises. Now, I'm on the other side, getting paid to fly for one of the Big Sky Mt ski resorts, and I get to play with some pretty cool planes on the side. Beats working for a living...
