Riddle Grad '94 Aero Sci, Prescott Campus... Gotta echo the statements above. I'm not trying rain on your parade, tear down a dream... but do yourself a favor, at least look into other avenues. The training is good, but it's not worth the money. I spent some $80k on my education and I honestly didn't learn anything there that I couldn't have learned from a couple hundred dollars in books and a couple of good CFIs. And as somebody stated above, with the pay of the regionals so low... the last thing you want is to have to think about a student loan to pay for. If your parents are paying for it... well, that's great, but as a graduate and after having been in the industry for almost 15 years since... that money could be spent better elsewhere. In the end, you may have a degree that is actually worth something... unlike mine. Sure, I can check a box saying I have a degree, and if I ever need to quit flying it would help... but it doesn't help me DO anything... or even PROVE I am trained in something that can be used in the workplace. Oh, and the statement about arrogance from the graduates? True... I rarely admit where I went to school mostly because of those idiots... and there are more than you think. It's actually not totally their fault in some ways... for four years I was told that my training was superior than anybody else's and that I was entitled to the best jobs. I was even told on several occasions freshman year that when I graduated I would walk into the right seat of a 737 because my training was that good. Anyway, just look into other options, other schools, degree programs... you won't regret looking into other ways, but you might regret NOT looking into it. And if you decide to go anyway, at least you can say that you were informed. It's not a bad school, it's just really expensive and it is not the 'ticket' that it's sold as. Tom M. DAB '95 here....still paying it off!?! Granted I did defer it a few times over the years, still a burden though. I'm not any better than the guy next ot me who went to "whatever U" and got a real degree (and probably got laid more than I did). I enjoyed it there but I wouldn't do it over again. ANY degree with quality flight time will get you where you want to go! Chris |

Are you talking about UNF (university of north Florida)? One of my ex's ended up going there, but I don't know anything about it.

[quote]ook at it this way, emery does something to be able to afford matt chapman/QUOTE] First of all.. nothing against Matt Chapman at all, but since what he and others like him do is so expensive, it doesn't take much to put a name on their planes... just money. Again, from all I have heard, and he's a good guy from what I understand, but I wouldn't read too much on what name is on what person's car, plane, or boat... all it takes is money. How did Riddle get that money? They just decided to charge more... according to folklore, about ten years ago Riddle hired a firm to figure out how to increase revenue, student enrollment and prestige. They came up with several options... one of which was to simply charge more... that way revenue would go up, and therefore prestige would go up... if it's costs more it must be better right? That's just legend to me... I was long gone by the time I heard that story... but it definetely sounds like the school I went to. FYI... I served on a committee in the early 90s charged with dealing with the Daytona campus' plans to close Prescott. I am not saying we had anything to do with PRC NOT closing... but I personally sat across the table from the president of the university while he told me it should be closed... what did I learn from that? EVERY university is about money pure and simple... nothing wrong with that, nothing good about that... it's just the way things are. Again, good school... made a lot of life long friends... however, I wouldn't go there again had I the chance. |

You know how you can tell a pilot is an Embry Riddle grad? You don't have to, they'll tell you ![]() I didn't go to ERAU so I can not speak from experience about their program. However, I have sat next to pilots in the cockpit who went to Princeton, Duke, Harvard, ERAU, flew fighters, bombers, air tractors, helicopters etc. We all ended up in the same place with vastly differing backgrounds, and our type ratings don't look any different. So if the premium is worth it in your eyes by all means do what makes you happy. Hard work and dedication on your part could save you and your parents thousand$. I would only caution you about being convinced that the ERAU name is a fast track backstage pass to the left seat of the SST or Boeing 787. Good luck with your choices and don't let anyone ever convince you you can't achieve your dreams. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Best thing you can do in terms of learning how to fly is to start with gliders. There you will truly learn how to handle the controls. And best of all, you will already be trained in the "worst" situation: no engines. ![]() I've heard that Lufthansa prefers pilots with a glider training background. I'm not sure if that's true (heard from a friend), but it makes sense. Also, even though I'm in a totally different country than the US, I would second the comments about going to a "normal" university, taking a degree in something actually useful if you ever need to get out of the aviation business and still make a living (business, engineering and such) and doing your pilot training "on the side". Use the money you'd pay towards the tuition for actually taking flying lessons and accumulating hours. Then get to a point of being an instructor and earn some bucks while accumulating even more hours. Around here a good way to accumulate hours "for free" is volunteering to tow gliders in a glider club... I know a guy who is 22 and is already a flight instructor. He started with gliders at 16 or 17. He earns quite a good sum with his instruction flights, pays his way through college, and there's still some bucks left for him to save towards buying a plane for himself. In my opinion, it's a much more fun and productive way to get into an aviation career. I'd definitely look into it as an alternative option as well.

As stated before in this thread has anyone been to or heard of Jacksonville University. This is a second choice I might have. Will find out next week. Let me start off,...... this thread is a hair off topic. I didnt really ask for information about the school. I already heard of or knew about what was stated above. I was wondering if anyone was planning on going to Embry-Riddle this fall. Stay on topic that is all I ask! I already knew what was stated above.
