Im 16, and I work at a grocery store as a bagger. This might be pretty obvious, but the one thing that I found out that helps me, no matter what my interests are, hobby wise or whatever, they are always in something I can sell later, to get money back. I mean, I was into skateboarding(dear god, what a waste of 4 years) and I sold my skateboards to get money back. I play golf, and have been able to sell old clubs etc, that kind of stuff is really helpful, if you can scramble to get another job etc. I have to wait to get my license till september, when I can take drivers ed(they dont trust me driving ) then that will be another expense I suppose, haha by then ill have my Funtana done! Anyways, I am lucky though, my parents do give me maintence money, like for fuel, and other things for my planes. Not planes, but he told him that if I am really interested in something, he will support me financially. So, I guess I luck out with that. Though, i am new to RC. I have 2 flying planes, 3 non flying. I have a Cessna 182 that I got with a combo pack on tower hobbies for Christmas, and I got a slowstick, which needs soldering which im on good at, an extra that im going to sell because the surfaces are just too dang small, and a Quickie 500 racer which I am going to get done, right after I finish my Funtana which im building now. They probably wouldnt help pay for it, but when my friends were out partying etc, I was building something with Rc, or playing Flight sim, or something thats more constructive then that. They only do it, just because im doing something that is constructive, and that is a postive hobby. My dad is real nice about taking me out to our field. Its 20 min away, he doesnt fly or anything, but he just sits and watches. Anyhow, some parents are just more generous then others, and some people just have multiple jobs. I only have 1, but I just learned to only invest in something that can either make me money, or that I can sell back for money, which is a good life lesson! |

There is no substitute for schooling. Very few wealthy people are self made, though its possible. Schooling is step 1 to making a good living!!!

Why would you need a giant scale plane when you are a teenager? It's like turning 16 and expecting to get a brand new Porshe. Sure, it would be awesome but in due time. In the meantime, get a bunch of electrics or profiles. Not much money and tons of fun. By them time you can afford a gasser, you will have the skills to do it justice. Those of us guys who can afford the gassers wish we were 18 again so we could drink tons of beer and run around and chase hot girls, but we are just lucky our wives allow us to buy big RC planes....

Well aviti, I really want to start competing in IMAC for serious and I tried fidiling around with my stik but it was so unstable and just bounced around in the wind. There was hardly anyway to make it look pretty. I am now fortunate enough to have a 25% underpowered GP patty wagstaff with a 3w 24i. It is rock solid stable and does manuvers like a dream and GREAT for IMAC basic. Even though it has a hard time getting the heighth it needs on humpty-bumps and stall-turns I work with it. I hope that I might ask for money for christmas and sell my 3w-24i and get up enough money to buy a new 3w-55ius . I think there is no way to get involved in IMAC without a giant spirit and giving up a lot of things. I'm giving up ALOT just so I can have a competitive chance in the sport I love.

I have a 33% cap and a 40% extra. I admit my parents did play a big part in this but for two summers and during school vacations i was down in florida helping my dad with his roofing company. To get my cap i sold every video game, rc car, bikes...anything i didnt use anymore to get, and everything was THIRD hand equipment except the airframe which was new. And im joining the air national guard in sept. and get 7,500 up front, with that i owe my parents like 2000 and the rest will go torwards a couple things for my truck and my private pilots license. Thats how i got what i got, plus some help from a local hobby shop.

When I was younger and still in mid/high school, I mowed lawns to pay for my flying hobby. I flew pylon competitively and always had a #1plane and a backup ready to fly, plus another on the board..... The best thing I ever did was get hooked up with a real estate agent who listed homes in my neighborhood. I mowed all of her listings for $30-$50 each during the summer. Then, I got a car and a girlfriend....... the hobby went to the side. A job turnin' wrenches in a local shop could not afford all three....Only did a little pylon and HLG stuff during that time.... Good news is that I still own the car, married the girl (just had our 8yr anniversary and are expecting our first child), and I'm back into the hobby with a bit of a vengance! I now make enough money as an adult that I could pay for it if I wanted to, however some opportunities have made it so it pays for itself. If you are a top notch builder, there are usually plenty of guys my age with no time to build and more money than smarts. Do a good job for one of them (I mean pro level expert work, not a hack job) and you'll likely make enough to start sackin' it away for your next project....

| Funkadelic | Hmmm, I'm 19 and I've been in this hobby for 9 or so blissful years. I've always had to buy everything and I could never imagine owning even a 25%plane much less a gasser. I've designed a number of my own planes and I usually fly a junk-heap special. Lately, I've been able to fly nicer planes like a Kaos and Telemaster. Soon I will be flying a Funtana as well. I got caught up with the 3D craze and it's never left me. I learned 3D flying every plane I have.(none are designed for 3D) I did my first torq roll two years ago with my Telemaster.(trainer) I like encouraging folks(especially kids) to fly the most. I've done some instructing and I help everyone who wants help with anything. I was recently given a NIB Sig Somethin' Extra kit. I built it and gave it to a great kid who needed to go beyond his trainer.(I pimped the plane out and he was thrilled) Ya'll may get thrills out of flying the giants, but I get my thrills by watching kids get the Giant attitude. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a giant plane, but I enjoy helping others more than flying a pimped out plane. Now that you've read part of my book, my point is, money isn't everything. Giant planes aren't everything. For me, it's passing on this hobby and passion to others. (I also love hanging out here spreading my sick, twisted sense of humor and opinions.[if you haven't already noticed. lol ] )50% Last edited by 50%plane; 08-05-2006 at 07:17 PM. |

What about us who love flying IMAC? To be a good competitor, it does require a bigger plane then nitro, if i didnt have big gassers, i can honestly say i probably wouldnt be flying right now because the gassers got me into IMAC. Now IMAC is all i ever do, and i love it! Its all about what you want out of the hobby. I've always been pretty competitive in things i do, so IMAC is perfect for me. And IMAC wouldnt be very fun with a small plane, including in the higher classes.
