I hope that I might ask for money for christmas and sell my 3w-24i and get up enough money to buy a new 3w-55ius .

I think there is no way to get involved in IMAC without a giant spirit and giving up a lot of things. I'm giving up ALOT just so I can have a competitive chance in the sport I love.
Maybe get a job then...plenty of people need their grass mowed. Less typing and more mowing. Hurry, when it gets cold out, there won't be any grass to cut for a while.

I gotta say thats not entirely true.
I fly a lot of IMAC, and we have a few very competitive younger flyers. Actually one of them is 15 and fly's a 3 metre extra 260, and fly's it incredibly well in the Unlimited class.

If you dont foster the talent you dont get people like Frazer Briggs or Chip Hyde and Quique.

When I finally have children, if one of them wants to learn to fly, I would be stoked! If they show particular talent and a drive to fly competitively then I will support them in any way I can.

What an awesome forum topic.
I have only gotten back into the hobby in the last 3 yrs (Previous experience being rubber band & free flight models with my dad) & the cost is large. BUT compare it to other hobbies/sports like Moto crossing or speedway or deep sea fishing. I see lots of kids on $8000 motox bikes & their parents support them in their sport. Usually as a result of seeing you work after school/weekends & forgo things you love to get you an inch closer to getting that first crummy low wing 40 size sports model.
I am now married, have good job, lovely daughter & am discovering money is tight again.
I spent 6 mths saving for the pride of my fleet. An ESM Adrenaline with pumped 120 & digital servo's and was so proud when it flew. Felt like a kid again.
I now hope to try my hand at Albury IMAC with it (basic) to see if i like competing. Then maybe start saving all over again for a 2.6 Extra or Air Wild Giles to be IMAC legal & chase the competitions around.
Who knows 2 yrs time i might be fueling up my DA150 at the Bendigo Masters.

Dont ever give up on your dreams!!

My comments had nothing to do with that.

It was all about the over the hill crowd wishing they were 18 again with all the free time and lucky that our current wives let us fly

hey
wat a great topic, iv been flying for about 6 years now and have a part time job delivering junk mail to keep my planes flyen. whats wrong with teenagers having big planes? we aint gonna reach our full flying potential buzzing around in 46 size planes! we need to unleash with big planes! we will eventually get bored with 46 size planes and possibly loose interest, and when us younger ones are the next generaton of flyers that aint gonna be a good thing!
cheers!

Me and my dad are in this hobby together and its been nothing but uphill. I think its awesome that we go to flyin's toghether and such. And yes my dad stepped up to the plate and bought me my QQ 100cc yak. I thank him much for how he has helped me. But now Im workin striving for a car next year. And hopefully having a nice pilot seat in the Air Force. That and flying model airplanes the rest of my life is truly my dream.

really....just learn to love what you do have.....learn to work hard for what you don't. after all this is just a HOBBY......yes it's expensive, but it's not about the plane you fly. Just go have a blast flying a katana mini or a 150cc gasser. if you work hard the money will come. I've wanted a gasser for a long time now. I'm just saving my pennies and maybe in five years i'll have something decent. just work your crappy job....and go home and HUCK IT BIG!

Well I think that the best thing is to buy everything you can afford right now. That's what I do. I'm 17 and I have my own lawn care business in the summer when that grass is like a weed and work with my dad with his Lighting company in the winter. The only thing is I buy the best of the best.......that I can afford. Digital Servos (Futaba 3050s) for my Funtana.

It feels great to have to save up for everything I buy and get it when I want it. When you have your own money you can do those kinds of things and not have to worry about asking dad or someone.

The only thing I didn't buy was my first plane "Santa" bought it for me for my '01 Christmas and I still have that plane (speaking of I need to fix that baby up and get back to flying 'er)

Ditto on the dad's part. If you dad is involved more than likely they will help out on the purchases. That's not the case with my dad. He just can't afford it. Every christmas I might get a kit or a heat gun but I like to buy my own stuff just fine.

Sometimes luck will help you out. I was fortunate enough to win a Futaba 7C TX at a fly-in. That saved me $250. Then I got my helicopter and saved over $800 from buying it from a flying buddy that NEVER flew it. You don't always have to buy new all the time. Used it just fine if they kept everything in good shape.

Just keep saving up and do all that you can with the money you have now.

Sorry, I type like 120 words a minute and got carried away with they typing!

Hmm, when I became teen I had 3 giants. I started flying IMAC when I was 11 and quite when I was 14 cause it didn't keep me interested. My grandpa has been with me since I have started and has helped tremendously also!

I have put alot of my own money in my planes and sold the older ones to get a new ones.
