No one has stated the obvious. Pattern/ Imac teach discipline. In learning the cumpulsory figures you become skilled in performng clean accurate flights. When you finally start flying 3D/ freestyle you naturally incorporate the prescision into the show; not just haphazardly banging the sticks into the corners to get a few oohs and ahhhs. Instead it will be a well thought out and organized routine that is intended. Personally I enjoy banging the sticks around. For me it is the freedom , but since we were on the subject , I figured I would put in my 2 cents. |

Im w\ highlights, most of the time when watching someone 3D you can tell who flies percision and who does not. I flew IMAC for about 2 seasons before i tried 3D, and I feel like it did help. I also feel that it would be much harder to go from a pure 3D pilot to 3D and percision because you get so use to throwing the sticks it becomes habit, if i lay off the imac for a couple weekends and fly lots of 3D then go back, my percision will stink!

You never stated what your final intent was, 3D, pattern or IMAC, or all of the above. If you just want to learn 3D, get a good profile plane and get at it. You can totally destroy several small planes for the cost of one good 30% gasser. If you can convince someone to give you a little stick time on a 30-35% gasser, you will soon see why they are so popular. As said earlier, don't try to fly what you can't afford to lose. Z |

It never hurts to learn some of both at the same time. I would practice point rolls while learning torque rolls..rolling circles and then moved onto rolling harriers. I think that has helped me not be a complete slob when doing 3D. 3D never looks that great if it appears totally out of control while you're doing it. Although good 3D still scares some people even when performed perfectly! Everything you practice consistently will give you more confidence with the orientation and characteristics of the plane at any angle, altitude, and speed. Listen to what others say but heed the advice accordingly. Your gut will tell you when you're ready for a bigger plane or/a greater challenge. Good luck! most start small because we all crash learning. Its alot cheaper to replace a H9 twist than a 40% Dalton. Not to mention its safer to the crowd watching you wad it up! But I don't think there is any advantage in IMAC/Pattern or 3D first. Both teach you reaction time and control of the rudder. They both can compliment each other |

Most of the answers were pretty good but all failed to mention that if you can do it with a little plane your big plane will make you look like your a way better pilot. I suggest a twist for learning on. I learned some pattern and 3d with my twist before moving on to my bigger planes. The twist might not perform the prettiest manuevers but it is agile, quick, light and tough. Not to mention will land dead stick just about stopped. Its a floater. Mine has taken a beating. But keeps flying.

I'm actually 100% with you Stommer! Although this thread is over a year old, you make a very good point. I've always believed that flying the smaller, more squirrley electrics and glows that are ALL over the place, will make you a better stick. Faster reaction time, and quick maneuverability bodes well for the larger stuff - some equate it to being similar to flying under water. Welcome to FG BTW!

IMAC/Pattern helps 3D, and 3D helps pattern/IMAC. They go either way. Personally, I learned 3D first, and that created some bad habits for me in precision. I would say to learn both at the same time. That is my .02 Start with smaller plane first (until you think you can handle a larger plane). Seth |
