| Pleez send cash!!!!!!! ![]() | When i started doing 3d with foamies and then went and flew some patterns i felt much more comfortable with the patterns because i had a better understanding of how i was looking at the plane and the proper inputs to keep it on a line or recover from an potentially bad situation.

| Down Low..Too Slow..DOH!! ![]() | I agree with fly what you want....but I also believe in cutting your teeth on the smaller stuff. If I see a newb trying to learn on a 35%er and making the typical newb mistakes with it.....I'll be pulling my stuff way back from the flight line. My steps of progression: Trainer 4 star 40 never made it past 5 flights 10 year break from flying 4 star 60 Ucando .40.......I learned the most with this plane 25% GP Patty Wagstaff.....learned some hard lessons with this one. Showtime 4D H9 33% Sukhoi TOC\AM\SD 33% Yak Custom designed\custom built 35% Suk....still in the works. There were some others in there as well....foamies..some other small electrics....speed planes....but I feel the best lessons learned were on the smaller stuff. I'm comfortable enough with the bigger stuff now that I can focus on learning a certain skill or move. Neo |

| Sleeping Beauty ![]() | Its true that some people recommend flying small and pattern first then 3d and the big stuff. I started 3d-ing the small stuff only because I didn't have the money for something bigger. I flew 3d first because I had no idea what IMAC was then. looking back I am glad I learned with the small stuff, my 3d trainer was a h9 twist, and it was the first plane I hovered with, after that everything else seemed like a piece of cake to hover. they say to do pattern first because that what all the contests are about except for freestyle. Pattern you learn to use the full range of the stick movements and your always moving the sticks as far as they can go if you got your rates right. Then 3d come naturally. Do whatever you like, theres no wrong way to learn. ![]() |

| Uber Contributer ![]() | I started flying a nexstar is august then I built a showtime 4d that I was 3d for a while. Now I has 2 50cc gassers. One is a Gp patty wagstaff and the other is a Goldberg edge 540. Just remember only spend as much on a plane that you are willing to lose.

| Lawn Dart Pilot ![]() | The fly what you want attitude is great.....BUT, crash a big plane while you are learning, and it's a bigger repair bill. Also, it helps to start on the small stuff to get the experience, and see what's out there. With more time you will have a better understanding on what you want. As for the pattern before 3D, I stongly agree. Pattern/IMAC, it doesn't matter, just pick one. It will greatly help you learn control of the plane. I know guys are going to come back and say, I fly 3D and have great control. That can be true, but look at all of the top 3D pilots. They all started out in pattern. Mike Darr |
