Default How to buy a lipo charger?

I'm was wondering if I could get some suggestions on buying a lipo charger....specifically:

1) Is it possible to get one that plugs into an A/C outlet or do I have to get a 12v battery?

2) What is a balancer and do I need one?

3) The plane I am currently working on is going to have a Thunder Power 11.1V 2100 LiPo. Is it better to buy a charger that suits it alone or should I get something that can do bigger stuff as well?

At this point, price is an issue but my biggest priority is something that is safe and reliable. My last experience with chargers was almost 20yrs ago running NiCds in my RC-10....so i'm a bit lost.

Thanks for the help.

first used an accu cycle that would only charge up to 4cells. I had to buy another charger when I got my 2M electric pattern plane.

I am now using a TP 1010C. works great!

Most (if not all) lipoly chargers have to be run off a 12v source. I have used many lipoly chargers such as the Orbit Microlader, Thunder Power 1010C and TP-425, Multiplex LN5014, Prodigy II, Astroflight 109, the list goes on... In my own opinion, the Prodigy II Multicharger or Multiplex LN-5014 have been the best charger for the money. Being essentially the same thing they charge nicad, nimh, lipoly, li-on, pb lead acid and charge/discharge them. It will charge up to 5 lithium cells and up to 5 amps which is plenty for the average electric user. For an average $69.99 I highly recommend it.

Balancers keep each of the cells at the same voltage which prolongs the life of the pack. It isn't necessary to balance your battery each time you charge but it helps to do it every once in a while. Especially with larger packs. I use the Astroflight Blinky balancer which balances while you charge or after. For about $30 with the apex/TP adapter I also recommend it.

Duratrax Ice charger - find one used, and get a used power supply. You won't need another charger for a long time. Do buy a blinky balancer - and an appropriate container to charge your lipos in.

I just got a Bantam e-Station BC6 and love it. It will charge anything, up to 6 cell lipos, dual power so you can use AC or 12V power. You can get adapter boards for any style balancing tap. You can even hook it up to your PC, but I don't have the cable to see exactly what information that will give you.

What other chargers are out there that can handle 2 or more lipolys at 1 time other than the polyquest? And can handle up to 4 cells if not more.
