Default Breaking into the gas scene

I will be breaking into the gas scene as soon as EastRC releases the Spoiler ARF. I've been slowly gathering the supplies I'm going to need, but I'd like some more info if you guys don't mind helping me out.

The motor I've got is a 31cc Ryobi conversion, with a magneto. I will probably do an EI conversion in the future, but for now its going to stay as it is.

I've been getting tips from someone at my club, and he recommended the following. I have a Futaba 6exp radio and an 8 channel receiver btw. He recommends the Hi Tech HS5645MG for ailerons and elevator and a HS5955TG for the rudder. Does that sound about right?

What gauge wire should I be looking at in the servo extensions and y harnesses i'm going to need with this?

What size prop would you guys try on this? I'd like to be able to do some 3D with it, so I'd need a shallower prop....maybe a 15x6? Something in that range?

The Ryobi is a pretty good motor, but I have doubts about being able to 3D with it. It will turn a 18-6 @ 7000. A 15-6 is too small. A 5955 is way overkill on this plane, but its a good servo. You can always use it for the next big one. Just get HD extensions & y-harness. Airwild has some really good ones.

thanks for the info. what about the ryobi makes you think it won't let me do 3d? is it the weight of the motor? Lack of power?

I would say both...

I transitioned from helis to planes and my first 3d plane at 70" wing span and 12-13lbs is in a weird spot for making the leap to gas (which is what I wanted) but now that I have flown it with glow (Saito 1.80, which is around 28cc?) and have flown slightly larger gas planes 40 and 50cc I think I can repeat what everyone told me "stick with glow for this size of plane". Which by the way is around the size that you would be putting a 30cc or so engine in IF you did go gas.

My Saito has gobs of power and probably close to half the weight (35oz with muffler) of the Ryobi engine and much quicker throttle response. Even a seemingly insignificant 1-2 lbs makes a huge difference if your HP and torque are comparable between the two engines.

Then again, at $40 a gallon of Nitro here in Canada compared to $4.88 a gallon of gas you could always see for yourself and make up your mind based on trial and error since you already have the Ryobi. As posted above though, I don't think you'll be able to do 3d or be happy doing 3d with a 30cc gasser either...

Hope this helps,
Marc

Just noticed as posted above: the Ryobi turns ant 18/6 prop at 7000rpm,
whereas comparably sized glows will do between 8500-9000rpm on 15% nitro, which is a HUGE difference in power btw. And that's what you need for 3d (even a liitle more wouldn't hurt )

If you have the ryobi go with it an get the plane up and flying. If you really like the plane then you can go with a purpose built gas engine in 35cc range . If you have a local guy helping you with the EI conversion that will shed some weight later on and improve performance a bit also.

If you plan on staying with the bigger planes I say buy servos that you can always transition to a bigger plane in the future if your budget supports it , the 5955tg is a good servo up to about a 80cc plane single .
