Hyperion 85 inch Yak 54

I have just started building a Hyperion Yak 54 in the new 85" (216 cm wingspan) version. I am aiming for a ready to fly weight of less than 15.5 lbs or 7 kgs.

This is a model strictly made for electric flying and lightened accordigly (this must be one of the first giant scales, that has to be converted to gas, if that should be ones preferece ).

On the pictures, notice the extended and lightened motorbox. The motor bolts straight on with no adapters or engine mounts. Also note the huge battery tray that extends all the way to the firewall. The canopy provides easy access, with the huge opening and quick latch.

So far it has been hinged and all surfaces sealed with clear ultracote. All fiber rudder horns has been installed. Servos mounted in the wings. Gear and motor installed...

Some pics of the motor... It's a Hyperion Z5045-B18 and will swing a 24x12 APC E producing 4000 watts.

Usually power doesn't have anything to do with the "easyness" of turning the motor. It has something to do with the number of magnets and the teeth (don't know how do you call them in english- maybe someone can chime in?) of the stator. I had two similar motors. You could turn one easily and the second one was impossible to turn. Both were very similar in weight, but the first one gave more thrust from the same prop and with the same A.

Tor: That it going to be a really awesome performer. Wish the battery cost would have come down!!

As long as the motor is not powered it can be turned easily. The magnetic field is created by the batteries.

Yes, the power is second to none. I have already tried this model/powersetup combo, which made me want to build one for myself straight away.
Batteries prices are comming down, but yes, it is still a bit expensive.

Got the pull pull done last night and some other stuff.

Servos are 5945, except rudder which is a 5955.

12 cell 5000mAh LiPos.

I am going to use 2 pcs. Hyperions VX5000 6S packs serial connected to 12S.

They are 20C sustained which mean they are good for 100Amp. 30C in burst of up to 30 sec, but that would exceed the regulator specs - so they are plenty of power.

Battery weight is 3 lbs 3 oz for a 12S pack or 1510 grams.

Picture is a 5S pack - 6S is slightly thicker.

Regulator installed. Made a small box for it so that it will get the cooling fins all the way out in the fake oilcooler box for best possible cooling...
