I had no idea that painting airplanes was so involved.

On the cowl on my 35% Aerotech Yak I probably would have used 3 gallons of it.
Lots of pinholes to say the least.
On my 35% Carden 260 the glass is as good as it comes & I haven't really noticed hardly any at all.
I think it all depends on the quality of the glass work.
The Carden stuff is excellent.

What's the advantage of using a two part catalist type primer over the lacquer type auto primer at Walmart for $2.98 a can ?

And do you use a glove when applying the fine line tape?
The K36 primer is a primer surfacer and also has some flex adjents in it. I guess to answer your question I know for a fact that the K36 sticks really good to the fiberglass and it also remains somewhat flexiable which keeps it from cracking from expanding and contracting and also vibration. Maybe the $2.98 primer would work, but I can't take that risk on a costumers plane. And also Yes I wear the gloves anytime I am touching the parts.

Chris, I can usually get about 4 airplanes out of a jar.

Dave---

When I painted my most recent cowl......I had the tape pull up the white paint but not any of the other colors I painted. Any reason why? I was using just straight masking tape

It could be a number of things but I would say the color under the white was to slick and not sanded or the white was not dry. What kind of paint were you using?

dave,

have you ever tried any of the water-based paints like those available from Nelson's Hobby? What's your opinion of those?
...i love the finish of the PPG stuff, but the stink and how toxic the stuff is really turns me off. It would probably be different if I had a proper paint booth to control fumes and such....but I don't.

I haven't tried the Nelson hobby paint. But I do know there is a water based, base coat clear coat called Auto-Air paints I haven't tried it but I know from talking to my local body shop that it works great. Do a google search for Auto-Air paints and you should be able to find it and see where you can buy it.

yea....i've read about auto-air as well...but haven't tried it yet. I've got some of the Nelson paints, but no real experience with it yet...just curious if anyone else has tried it or anything similar. Thanks for the info.

I've tried the Nelson paints and did not care for them. My biggest gripe is that it did not atomize very well out the gun and the surface looked " Pebbley " until you got enough paint sprayed to get it to flow out. Then runs were very difficult to avoid and the paint would build up too much around the tape line. I tried thinning as per instuctions and then even more and tried various air pressures. I'm sure that with some practice and experimentation I could have gotten fair results. In the end I just gave up and spent the $ on Chromasbase.
