Hey Paffy,
I did a little reading about the DBU and its still a base coat like the DBC but it takes a catalist unlike the DBC which takes nothing but reducer. From what I read they also said that they are trying to do away with it because most people are using DBC but having a hard time getting rid of it because alot of people that started using DBU like it and still demand it over DBC. As far as taping I guess just do what you said and test it after 45 minutes.

Now we're all on the same page !

The body shop owner that works with me on this one doesn't like DBC much for some reason I already forgot. He's been using DBU since forever. He also said PPG is pushing the DBC and trying to discontinue DBU, just like you say.

You mix the DBU 1:1,5 with active reducer, so you have to dump whatever is left.

Three sources now say it's OK to tape in 30-45 minutes, so I feel pretty confident about it.

P.

All this paint talk has stirred my memory banks, too. I used to do a bit of streetrod painting, etc and always used PPG products. Most of the time it was DBC and 2020 or 2001, but I see they have moved to 2021 and 2002 now. I have used the 2021, it is about the same stuff I think as the 2020. The DBU always required different reducers, etc, and so many other PPG products used the same hardeners/reducers as was used with DBC, I found it not very user friendly to use the DBU and related products. If I was only going to do a single color, I always used (and my most favorite paint) DCC and mixed the final coat about 60/40 with DCU2021 clear(I think that's right, it's been awhile since I shot any, can't remember all these numbers off the top of my head...). I think the DCC paint flows out and just looks really rich and creamy after it is applied. Always had good luck with it. Base coat/clear coat is the only way to go with mulitple colors. Just my 2 cents worth...PACO

Dave What is your cost to paint a 42% Cowell?
4 Colors
Monocoat Aluminum
Insignia Blue
True Red
Yellow
Basic Lines nothing Fancy!

Also If you are planning on using a large engine decal on top of the cowell do you install the decal then clear coat over, or do you install the decal after clearcoat. I have seen both ways.

Hey Dan

I paint all my decals on using paint mask, it takes time but looks cool and they never come off. As far as painting your cowl, I really wouldn't have time to do it even if I wanted to,I have way too much on my plate right now!

Is there a maximum time that you can wait before applying clear? Days, weeks? Might have to send a project out for numbers and logo work, just wondering if there are any time issues leaving base coat uncleared other than contamination.

Craig.

Craig.
After you apply your basecoat it has to be cleared in 24 to 48 hrs. If you can't get it cleared in that time frame then you can shoot a coat of DBC 500 over the basecoat and then it can sit until you are ready to clear it, but before you clear you have to light sand it with 800 grit sandpaper.

Dave, is there any kind of pencil or marker that can be used on the basecoat as a guide for taping that will then clean off?

Craig.

Dave,
Thanks for the tip on the pinhole filler. I applied it last night. I was wondering though how you get all the dusty bits cleaned off. It sort of has a gritty feel once cleaned off. The stuff seems to be cut by water so I don't think I can rinse it off. Do you just tack it real good?
Thanks
Will B.
