Badass! Covering A 40% Carden 330

Well, after much delay and many excuses, the time has come to slap some plastic on this bird. And.. none of my friends wanted to tackle this thing for me, so
I was left to do the covering myself. (THANKS MIRACLE)

To preface this, I can hardly wrap a sandwich, let alone cover a precision aircraft, so I was at a bit of a loss here.

Not to worry, I simply called my mentor and friend Papa Stek, and asked.. "Hey Joe... how do you cover one of these things.?"

After a very detailed afternoon of explanation and demonstration (Thanks Joe) , Stek had me doing the process and then left me to my own devices to finish the bottom of my Stab... and after HOURS and HOURS of work...I did it!!

Its not show quality, there a few little marks or a remnant of a tiny bubble... but Its starting to look like my drawing.. and that is pretty darn cool!

But MY GOD... Covering can take a LONG TIME.
6+ hours for 1/2 of a stab.... I'm SCREWED.

Makes me think about the Toledo covering contest enteries... you would have to be insane.

Looks good Sleepy! You'll get the hang of it. Cutting trim is the hard part.

On my Kaos(in my avatar, It took my 10 hours to get it completely covered with the white. Total covering job with all the trim(cut monokote) I had 40 hours into it.

Hope this makes you feel better!

Thanks Steve,

Happy to have helped you get started on this long road of covering your own plane.
It looks good, Da#* good, if I may say. Like I said, just take your time. Speed will come as you learn what you doing with the irons. don't forget that "stretching" thing, also. Spring and flying season are 5 month off, so you have plenty of time to get this done on time for Toledo.

Call if you have any problems.

I seem to remember offering to have you come down one weekend for a "covering tutorial"....nice...

......good luck with the paint.

ps...after actually taking a second to look at the pic...i'm impressed! Only 7 more "halves" of wings and stabs to go....and a full fuse....and you'll be almost there!!

....figure oh....another 49 hours to go.....x2 with the fuse. at 2 hours a night....you might be done with the covering in another 2 months! Sweeet!!

TIPS.. hahaha.

My tip is to find a guy like Papa Joe to help you!

HAHA.

So far the best thing Joe has said is DO NOT BE AFRAID TO PULL and STRETCH THE MATERIAL.
This is a good one. it really helps.

And good heat on the iron, 300 seems to work well.

Hey Jason,
Don't rush him. Remeber, I seen him in action with this process last weekend.

Just kidding Sleepy, you are doing good. Don't rush or let anyone else rush you. Perfection take time.

Jason, Yes, that is all Sleepy was worried about when I was there. He kept saying, "How am I going to get the painting done" ? I would tke your phone off the hook now. Get ready.....What are friends for ? Especially ones that can paint ?

Rush him??!! Heck, I think rushing him is the last thing we should worry about....I'm sure you got to see that Dalton that's still not finished while you were there? I think someone needs to stand behind him with a bull-whip to make sure he gets this one finished! Anyone ever checked him for adult-ADD? Maybe him and Swanger can join a support-group together.

Ya....paint will definitely be a challenge.....I'm glad I can't paint! Every time I try I screw something up.

Sleepy's always telling me how good he is with an airbrush so I think he'll be alright.

Like Jason said....You have to get the plane to the paint stage before you can paint it.

I hope Sleepy ain't reading all this ? .....Because He should be covering.
