While I was busy putting the Rudder rack together, Ron mounted the engine and assembled the fuel tank. There is a template provided with the instructions that is simply lined up with the cross hairs already on the firewall and then the four holes are marked and drilled. Turns out, these holes are PERFECT!!! So, after you drill the holes, install the T-Nuts and bolt the motor right up with the supplied standoffs. It saves SOOOO much time to just have this part already science'd out! Once the motor is mounted, place the ignition module underneath the engine box with Zip-Ties or the included velcro straps. Included with the kit are a bunch of "U" shaped clamps for securing the ignition wires. I secured my lines with Zip-Ties and fuel tubing for anti-chaff,, the provided clamps make for a very tidy installation though. |

Next I secured the Ignition battery and switch. There is a bit of vibration, so be sure to secure the connectors and anti-chaff the wires where they pass thru the first bulkhead... |

I took another break while Ron fit the cowl. The instructions include a diagram for making a template for the DA150 Exhaust Pipes. Find some stiff paper or card board for this and with the engine in place, and the muffs temporarily bolted on, line the holes up with the template over the exhaust, and securly tape one edge to the bottom of the fuselage. You do a similar process to transfer the cowl mounting screws from the mounting blocks (That are installed, drilled with T-Nuts!), to the engine cowl. The instructions give great guidance on this with good pictures. Now you can remove the muffs and mark and drill the mounting holes in the cowl, and mark the Exhaust holes. Ron went on to assemble the Receiver tray and the Tank mount while I trimmed the cowl. Something I have always wanted to try was to create a sort of Louvre for cooling exhaust rather then a big hole. This can be risky! If I made a mistake, I would have to replace the Cowl!!! I have worked with composites professionally for 20 years... so it is my advice to trim the cowl as indicated in the instruction manual... But this is what I did...... I used a structured tooth tungston carbide bit to cut the perimeter of where the "Louvres" should be. Then I placed a piece of 3/32 inch balsa sheet under the tab, heated it locally with a heat gun and folded the tab up while it was hot. Then quickly, I cooled it with a squirt bottle of water. Sort of a Thermo-Forming process... you usually only get one shot at this! |

Here you can see the tank installed and we will use the included clamps to tidy up the fuel lines. Be sure to sand all bonding surfaces. Once you get the throttle linkage done, the wires secured, fuel lines clamped, installed the Choke Push rod and Mufflers bolted on, you can put the cowl on. 11.jpg 12.jpg 13.jpg 14.jpg 15.jpg Now we are ready to install all the avionics. Start by mounting the Ignition battery and the ignition switch. GP provide precut switch holes, two on each side, fwd and aft, left and right. For my installation, it just seemed natural to put the ignition battery and switch on the (pilots) left side. Initially I placed the two Rx batteries alongside the fuel tank, with the 2.4 Ghz 14 channel FUTABA Rx on the Rx tray behind the tank. Be sure to finish the rudder cables and hook up the tail wheel steering springs! 16.jpg 17.jpg 18.jpg 19.jpg 20.jpg |

Here are a couple more snaps of the Rudder cables and the tail wheel steering springs as well as some internal radio installation..... |

OK.. Last items.. Batteries/Regs are mounted, Fuel Tank secure, Wires for the elevator servos run thru the fuselage, Rx mounted on Foam....We are about done with the basic assembly!!! WOOOOWHOOOO!!!!! A few more snapshots of what it looks like..... A small hole here for the Choke pushrod to poke thru 1105.jpg 1106.jpg 1107.jpg 1108.jpg 1109.jpg The manual has an extensive section on the throws and expos. This is a great place to start! The indicated CG is also a conservative and very safe locaction... (5.75") Included with the Kit is a gnarly little set of fixtures for checking the CG. They are essentially Cradles placed under each tip and there are premeasured/drilled holes for placing a screw driver in... I will now post a bunch of pictures of various and random things that may help answer any questions.... 1110.jpg 1111.jpg 1112.jpg 1113.jpg |

More Mikey snaps 1137.jpg And this is TOO MUCH RUDDER.. I reduced it to the indicated travel in the manual.. really.. a bit hard to manage that much deflection on such a big flipper! And just how big is this plane??? Well.. I am just an RCH under 72 inches tall....

OK.. how about some Pix of this plane flying!?!?!? 1155.jpg So.. how does it fly you ask? Awesome fun! A little sports car.. Very nimble. Incredible Blow Overs and nice harriers upright and inverted. Rolls very fast even in High Angle Harrier Rolls.. it rolls fast... Knife edge is very solid.. I needed about 9 or 10 percent up elev to rudder mix, and it seems just right for all flight conditions and flight speeds.... Mine is built STOCK! I took no measures to reduce weight! I am using a single FUTABA 14MZ Rx on 2.4 Ghz. Dual Batts/Regs. 1800 five cell NiHm on ignition. I used all the supplied hardware including the wheels, tank, engine standoffs.. everything. I do not have a reliable weight.. I will try to get that soon.. but regardless of the weight, I have oooodles of vertical performance and it is far from a "Tippy Rock"! I have done Full Elevator deflections at various speeds to try and determine if it has tip stall tendencies... NOT!!! This plane is really fun to fly.... I just know I am gonna take risks with it better order my second one now!!! |

OK.. one modification I made after the first few flights was to get the CG back to the aft indicated position. The batts mounted by the tank result in a forward CG.. safe, but the true 3D capability of this model can not be realized at the forward CG... I moved my two 4000 mah Li-Ions back about 30 inches. I added a cross member and a Battery tray.. the pictures pretty much show the whole deal... just make sure if you do this, the tray is secure.. If the tray comes loose, the batteries will unplug and/or beat the inside of the plane to death! 1161.jpg 1162.jpg 1163.jpg Ummm... well.... ask someone who was in Fresno how this happened... 1186.jpg 1187.jpg 1188.jpg |

I will try to get some video this weekend.. I will demonstrate the SLOW Flight characteristics in particular as several have speculated the plane is too heavy... NOT!!! And I will show lots of slow controlled flight as well as some faster snappy stuff....
