I like to add some PU glue to my lightweight filler. This gives a nicer consistency and helps it stick to the foam. Am also gluing on the last bit of foam.

Got the carb air intake done, this is the last part to make. Will give it a final sand tomorrow and start glassing next week. I will give it two layers of 200gm glass for a nice solid surface.

Looks awesome. Man, you must love Sukhois to devote this much time. It must be awesome to have a plug for backups though!

First layer of glass on the cowl. I put the second layer on straight away. I will cut the glass right next to the masking tape when the resin is green (just gone off). I will chamfer the cut so the glass on the other side has a clean join. The idea is to get nice clean glass layups to minimise sanding into fibreglass. I only want to sand filler and undercoat. I have previously used only 1 layer of 200gm (6oz) glass but it hasnt really been a firm enough surface.

Here is the canopy with 2 layers of glass each applied in one piece with no relief cuts. I will take a mold off the canopy so I can make a fibreglass base for the canopy. Then I will add more foam front back and underneath and add 3 more layers of glass for vac forming the clear canopy. You need heaps of glass on a vacuum forming tool or it will get crushed by the vacuum. I know this from experience.

Here is another drawing of the 29 showing the DA85 installed. Unfortunately the plug will protrude through the cowl. I will try cutting the plug down and making a custom plug cap for it. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Rod, Yes I see what you mean about the plug and you already have it inverted. How would it sit if you draw it with the necessary side thrust and mount cyl to the right with the motor offset to the left, even cheating a few mms if necessary. This would then present your manifold on the bottom which could make things easier when fitting the pipe/muffler ???? Just a thought, Cheers, B. |

Hi Barrie the drawing is only indicative. I would certainly rotate the motor to suit my header. Mind you I will bend up my own header to suit. Also I will be rubber mounting the motor/pipe. Anyway I don't see any real problem altering the plug setup. |
