Hi Barrie I mix the microballoons to a non sagging consistency. Microballoons are more expensive than microspheres but are definitely nicer to work with. I use a vinyl aplication tool to apply the mix. Hard to know how much I will need to put on depends on how good my shaping was. I am going to use epoxy undercoat which should be more stable than laquer based undercoat.

Got the first undercoat on the pattern today. The first chance to see how much surfacing needs to be done. Well probably 2 more microballoon/undercoat processes with additional work in some areas. It took about 2 hours to sand off the last coat of microballoons.

It is quite cool here so the paint needs some encouragement in the foam oven. The heater is a 60 watt wardrobe heater and the switch is a 60 deg C fixed temperature unit.

Sanded the undercoat off. Added more glass to the forward upper fuselage to build it up a bit. Added alot more microballoons all over. Sanded all that. The surfacing is almost done, probably a bit more on the nose. About to give it another undercoat. So far all the sanding has been with 80 grit wet or dry sanded wet. I will start going finer on the sandpaper from now.

Got more undercoat on. Its looking reasonably fair now. Bit more work on the cowl and around some of the joins between parts

More undercoat on the pattern. Very close now down to the few pin holes clean up the edges and some low spots. Will do one more micro balloon/undercoat cycle and put on the panel lines before molding.

I am not that keen on polyester but I thought I would give this product a try as I have heard good things about this type of material. It turned out really well. I sanded it off wet after an hour cure. I think I will try it for making panel lines.

Now that the cowl is shaped up I can put the cowl mounting ring on the fuselage and pipe cowl. I have cut it on the band saw at a 5 degree angle so it will come out of the mold more easily.

Lots more undercoat and filler so we are looking pretty good now. Just have to decide whether to do panel lines. The epoxy undercoat is performing really well so I wouldn't bother with a top coat. Will be able to start making molds next week.
