The splitter plate and a couple of dams are off and I have cleaned up the plastercine ready to mold the other side. The pine dams released easily but the MDF was more sticky and left some undercoat on the gelcoat. Have to wait and see how the mold releases off the pattern. (We need a crossed finger icon.) Am putting more sealer on the exposed flange and will need more dams.

Got everything sealed and released up then put on the second side dams. Again 3 coats of epoxy gelcoat with the 3rd coat getting the first coat of glass pressed into it. 5 layers of 200 gm glass all over and an extra layer on the flange.

I will let the mold cure for 24 hours and then post cure it in the foam oven overnight. I could stick it straight in the oven but the heat could make the pattern distort along with the mold. It has taken a little longer than I thought to mold this part so I will probably take anothe 3 or 4 weeks to finish all the molds. However I will be able to make parts like this pipe tunnel cowl before then.

This is a view of the mold halves without any cleanup. They released easily just picked up a little undercoat on the dam areas, there are also a few tiny air bubbles not visible here. I will carry on with the rest of the molds in the same way. 2 parts done 7 to go.

Setting up the cowl mold. Every setup is a bit different. With the release system I am now using it goes much quicker and I am gaining confidence with it. The middle pic shows the setup to mark out the splitter plate.

Progress. After the gell coats I got the 6 layers of 200gm glass on in one go. For these complicated shapes it is easier to use small pieces of glass. Fortunately a recent job (2.2M propshrouds for wind machines) left me with a lot of free offcuts.

The cowl mold is finished. It will need to cure for a couple of days. Next up is the canopy mold.

Now I am setting up to mold the canopy. The idea is to make a full canopy mold that can be used to make a frame for the clear canopy or an unglazed full fibreglass canopy. I will add some more foam and glass to the pattern when this mold is done for the clear canopy pattern.

Pulled the cowl mold off the pattern. Stuck up slightly in the recessed nose area as I didn't do a perfect job of the finish there.
