I designed and built this duplicator using a small router, The pictures you see here is just cutting on the duplicator, then of course, I have to sand them with a drum sander until all the cutting marks are out, and balance. then I paint a clear urathane coat, balance again, once balanced, I drill for the engine I am using, then water sand with fine grit like a 400 until smooth, then spray again the clear urathane, once dry, water sand again, then put my name on it, and the size, clear coat again but this time, carefull checking the balance at the same time let it dry and voila...Being retired , it cost me about 1.5 hours total of my time, plus $7.00 dollars of properly dried Beach wood.. for a 26*10 the last I made is a 36*12 for my EVO 300 I have been flying my own props for the last 7 years, not my design though. Roger

To make a laminated prop, the work is exactly the same, but you would first prepare thin layers of wood, glued together first, then on to the machine. The problem with an apparatus like I have is there is a lot of artistic to it since you have to finish the prop by eye balling it and balancing it., That's why I dont' sell any Roger

Bruce! From what you said in your post about your friend's QQ YAK, it must have been a Wren 54. I have two AirWorld Ravens and Composite Arf Yak and have had no problems with "hot wings." How far was the exhaust from the wing and what was the wing made out of? Thanks! Hayes Hutchins

Today, after a very nice flying session at the field, my buddy came back to my place and helped me cut the top part of the second wing.. Roger

Since I couldn't get 1/4 square spruce, from the local hobby shop, I decided to make my own, and today, I installed some on the second wing. , also the tube socket is in and glued. and for Tony about the props, here is the biggest one I made a few weeks ago, for my EVO 300, its 36*12... Roger

How did you cut the holes in the ribs for the tube socket so that it is square in the wing panel? Also instead of using spruce for the wing spars, could you use balsa spars with carbon fiber mat laminated to one side for added strengh? The reason I ask is I am ordering a set of plans today from Jack, and I am thinking of using a 3W-106 and trying to think of ways to keep the weight down. Thanks, Keith |

For the tube socket holes, I made plywood templates for the root and for the 4th rib. you have to align them exactly and I use little nails through the foam with masking tape also so nothing moves.. On the plans from Jack he does show you how to go about it., Its not hard at all. Also aside from myself here, Jack is on here for questions that I might not be able to answer, after all it is his design. and Scott Morgan who has built a few of these...You are not alone LOL For the spruce being replaced by balsa with carbon fiber, I can't answer this since I haven't done it, I presume you could ...But also the weight saving in this area might not justify the amount of work , Jack and Scott can chime in for this as they have more experience with this design The airplane is already built very light.. remember that.. Roger

Roger, Thanks for the reply. I went back and read from the beggining and seen how you did the wing tube. Sorry for the redundent question. I aslo seen your building the 33% and not the 40%, so I will have to ask Jack about the 106. I'm enjoying watching you progress step by step. Thanks, Keith |

Keith, I am building the 40%, along with the help of Scott and Jack. The answer to your carbon fiber question is no one will use it. Spruce, 1/4 " stock is all it takes. Jack doesn't use carbon fiber, Scott doesn't use it and since they have great flying Lasers mine does not use carbon fiber. I know that Scott's 40% use a 3W, 106 and his came out at 28Lbs. Hope this helps. Tony |

I am not sure which Wren it is the exhause are about 1 and 1/2 feet away from leading edge it is a balsa and lite ply wing with ultracote for covering. He even put some brass plates on top of the wing around the leading edge before the fire but they still got hot.
