Tony,

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that they were only 1/4". It wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Does anyone know if a set of foam core wings would weigh about the same as the jig built ones? I was just thinking that the cost to make the jigs, and the other materials, you might be able to get a foam core set cut for the same money.

Thanks,

Keith

Mine is foam core, cut by Scott, Scotts is foam core also cut by Scott. Like I said, Scotts Laser is 28 lbs finished. Scott has both wings, foam core and foam rib, he flies foam core. Must be a reason. All I am doing is following the methods that have proven sucussful for Scott. Find his 40% Laser build here on FG. Lots of good info.

Thanks for the reply. I went back and read from the beggining and seen how you did the wing tube. Sorry for the redundent question. I aslo seen your building the 33% and not the 40%, so I will have to ask Jack about the 106. I'm enjoying watching you progress step by step.

Thanks,

Keith
Hi Keith, The 106 should fly the 40% Laser just fine, at 28#, depending on what you want to do with it, personally I do not like foam wings, I feel they are inferior to, strength wise, weight wise, and longitivy, to the built up wings. The I beam spar is much stronger than foam, IMHO. I fly IMAC so I am concerned with the weight, and 30 to 34 pounds is ideal for windy conditions, in competition, also I prefer a 150 cc engine for the vertical performance it provides. At any configuration on the wings, you will be amazed at the flight performance on the Laser Keep in touch.
Regards
Jack

Bruce! Thanks for the information! None of my engines have that spacing between the exhaust and the wing and I have not had "hot wing" issues. Must be the material that the wings are made of. Thanks again for the information. Hayes Hutchins

I would like to thank everyone participating in this thread with either questions or answers...

I would also like to say that the way I am doing this build is not the only way to do things, its just one of many but one I am comfortable with ..

Here I am showing you with pictures how I personally go about preparing the sheets for the wings.

I am using white glue as per Jack Strickland's recomandation and he is right , it does sand better then the yellow carpenters glue.

To apply the glue, I have found a small syringe in the wall paper department which comes filled with wall paper glue, I simply rinse it out and its good to go for this application...

Roger

Hello Roger
I very much would like to see detail pictures regarding the leading edge of the wing, the trailing edge of the wing, and the ailerons. I would like also see pictures detailing what happens with the rear spar. I think the procedures you are using, making wings, are the best I've seen. I think they are light, strong, accurate and economical.

Thanks,
Randy

For those interested, I wrap wax paper around the tube, then wrap a six inch fiberglass tape heavy tupe, and make it overlap until you have reached the lenght you need , in my case 16 inches..and hold in place with making tape, I will take pictures of the next one as I am making the different steps.

Also I had to make another propeller so I can fly tomorow, here you see it with the fist coat of varnish,

Hello Roger
Yes I am very interested in how you made the wing tube socket. I am amazed how much I paid for a cardboard tube. Can't wait to try your technique.
Thanks, Randy

Hi Randy,
First for the wing techniques, its not my invention. but it works great..

As for the wing tube socket, Jack Strickland told me how to do it and guess what it is so easy...

You take the aluminum tube you are going to use, wrap a bit more the lenght of the socket you will need with wax paper from the grocery shop . I tape it so it will not unrol, two layers is good.

Then using Roving Fiberglass material, I use 6 in wide, roll it around on the waz paper overlapping it as you go for the lenght you will need.. again I tape the end so it stays put.
After this , you can use epoxy or polyester resin...

I used Polester resin, I mixed more then enough and then with latex gloves, I simply poured some resin on the fiberglass, and rubbed it in until the material changed color, you do this for the whole thing , and you should have plenty of time before the resin starts to cure. Leave alone until nice and cured. then pull the tube out of it, , voila a socket.

while waiting for the balsa sheeting,, I think I could grow my own

I cut more spruce 1/4 square sticks for the fuselage sides..I also cut the front plywood and glued them with white glue (carpenter's glue) and put those sand bags to good use again.. and the turbine for encouragement lol
