Hi Matt
Did you read my post about the building board? 6 feet is pleanty long to build a 40% fuse on.

Yes i did. I'm sorry i should have been more detailed. The boards i'm finding at the local DIY stores in the 6 ft range are about 1/4in-1/2in thick. I'm going to have to come up with a good way to brace or keep looking around...

How wide and straight are these boards? If they are not warped, 4ea., 1/2 inch glued toghether should be a good building board. Check the plans to get the width, make sure the width is adequate for the tail feathers also.

Hello all
A few of you have asked for a picture of the finished 40% Laser that was recently completed. In 3 of the pix there is a closeup of the just installed optical kill switch, and an on board tachometer. Got these goodies from Roger. When the ignition is armed, the led on the cowl is on, as well as the tach. These accessories are very easy to hook up. This bird weighs 31 lbs., 3W 150, 32-10 Mejzlik. True Turn 5 inch spinner, Airtronics radio, two recievers, and Sanyo Enloop battery packs (3) and Airtronics servos, One on each aileron, and one on each elevator, one on the rudder. An Rcexcel ignition is used, also Boost tabs on the rudder and ailerons, they will be installed on the elevators soon.
Regards to all

Help! Re: 40% Turbo Laser (scratch built)

Roger,

Excellent job on the build. I wanted to ask if you know where I might be able to get a set of foam wings cut for the 40%. I got a set of plans last year from Jack and want to build one this year. I would build them the way you guys have, but I don't have the foam cutter or jig to do any of it. Foam core would just be easier for me. Thanks for any help.

Keith

Keith, lots of places can do that for you, but ask Scott Morgan first. He has built many, many of these Lasers (6 ea 40%, over 50 ea 35%) over the years and has all the jigs/templates ready to go. His username in here is SJMorgan.

Jack,
the plane looks great! 31# on the 3W 150 sounds like just about enough power (tic). I really want to builld one for myself, and plan to start in late winter. I had a change at work and will soon be working 6+ days a week. Under the circumstances I am extremely lucky and blessed to remain employed and "needed", so I am not quite sure how to squeeze in the build, but I want to build one anyhow. It may take me a year to do it though.

Roger,
is there a chance to get that tachometer with a backlit LCD display, or with an LED readout of some sort? I have trouble reading screens in the bright sunlight while straining to hold the plane, etc., and that might make it easier. That sure looks like a great tool to have. I would like one to fit in between the temp monitors for my twin BME. Nothing beats USEFUL bling...!

Brett,
There is only one style of tachometer and it is with red leds , they are quite powerful so you shouldhn't have any trouble seeing it .

Roger
