Default Re: The WRONG way to TEACH RC Flying.... ??!!

BIFF is right. 20 years ago when I was learning we did not have trainer cords, the TX was passed back and forth, HOPFULLY in time for the plane to be saved before it hit the ground. Also remember that the only ARF's on the market were thr EZ and they were expensive. So if you crashed it meant months of builing or weeks of repair to get back to training. I learned this way and when my instructor thought I was ready to take the plane by myself, he put it on the ground and walked away!

Joe: that was too funny! and just plain wrong

Yup...i remember when i started. Back in the early 90's, there were no buddy box's so it was either the side stance or the reach around. I personally never did the reach around but with some pilots, by the time you forked the Tx over to the instructor, the plane was about 10 feet away from a permanent dirt nap. Yes, that pic looks akward, and i was, put put yourself in their shoes...and back then, you couldn't just go and get a 90$ trainer ARF to replace it....you actually had to build it.

I learned in the early 90's too, no buddy box. I was a kid though and my dad taught me.

Great responce Biff,

Back in the day This was one of two options , either reach aroud (like the picture) or yank the transmitter out of their hands. I have had a students that won't let go of the transmitter no matter what ! Some time you must do what it takes.
But Today where we stand tech wise there is no excuse not to use a buddy cord.

Just my opinion guy's

I can't tell you how many times in the 70's you would here a new guy at the field ask "Hey buddy,, I'm a bit nervous about flying the plane by myself. It would certainly calm my nerves if you could give me a reach around." Being as modelers are a helpful bunch, it wasn't at all uncommon to have several guys giving buddies reach arounds at any one time.
Remeber guys,, if your student shows up at the field ready for instruction without a trainer cord,, fear not ! Just assume the position and give him a reach around!!
OMG Biff that is funny...!!!

Hey Buddy can you give me a reach around I forgot my training cord...eeewwww

I wonder if they cuddle after landing or if the instructor just walks off?
