I provided Hospice home health care for 6 months while my mother was dieing from COPD and lung/bone cancer. She was a lifetime smoker and I had been smoking for 12 years. The day she died she was just short of her 55th birthday and that was the day I quite cold. That was 18 years ago. Watching someone die from smoking is the best motivator....

I quit on Jan 1 2007.
Cold turkey. Haven't even cheated once.

The first 2 months were hard, but I promised my kids I would stop and I did.
Also Tank said he'd shoot me with a 50 cal if he saw me smoking... that helped as well.

Quitting is easy now. Just get a prescription for Chantix. I did and quit after 44 years. You take that stuff and you won't care if you ever smoke. As for getting someone else to quit you could try telling them you'd like to have them around for their grandkids wedding.

Agreed. My grandmother made it to 78, but the last 4 years of her life with emphysema were hard, and it was tough to see her struggle just to walk across a room. Same thing here - the day she died, I stopped, but then my dumb a$$ started up again due to other life events. Luckily, it only took me 5 months to wise up and remember the pain of my grandmother. This 4th of July will be one year, smoke-free. I had stopped and started back up several times in my life, but never made it a year without smoking, so I hope that that magic number takes me past the point of no return.

I think the best advice anyone can give you is avoid "smoking" situations.

If you successfully quit for 3 months, you've made it as long as you don't hang out in places where all your buddies are smoking.

I remember when my first 3 months were up, I didn't feel the urge to smoke at all, but if I took a break at work, and there were 20 people standing outside smoking, I felt the urge, so I just stopped taking breaks. It helped my work load, and I never had that "friends are smoking , I need to smoke feeling"
