I was wondering that too.

Check out the other pilots reactions on the flight line at the time of impact.

I was standing one station to the left of David and he had full control of his plane. He was doing fly byes like that all week and not one time did he flinch. David is a heck of a pilot and I'm sorry for his loss, we can only hope he can find the problem that brought it down. I can't wait to see what he brings next year. Rob

It sounded like a thunder clap, than the heat hit. It was incredible ! I was talking to Matt Chapman when it happened,
heres what dave says

"Guy's,

We've figured out what happened - someone turned on (accidentally I hope).

We duplicated the exact scenario.

When you have a radio (JR10X) on and working, and add another radio on the same channel, at a reasonable distance away (to where it won't immediately swamp the original) and slowly bring the 2nd radio closer, once within range, the 1st radio goes into about 1/2 stick of down elevator before going into hold/failsafe. It's probably less than a second of input in the down elevator before holding.

If you do this and the 2nd radio is close by and swamps the signal, it goes into hold/failsafe immediately (without the down elevator).

What I'm imagining is that I flew into the 2nd radio signal somehow, and being so low, coupled with the speed, there was no room to fly out of it, even with the strong signal strength of the JR.

As far as the ebay deal, c'mon, you guys have waaaay too much time to analyze all of this.

So what did I learn out of this? Hmmmm, fly inverted low passes from now on and fly on 2.4! "

that was fortunate to occur on the straight and not turning in towards the crowd, or worse yet on the outbound towards other homes....and such....i would love to know what caused it to go in, ground effect simply doesnt cut it for me, either elevator failed, elevator servo failed, or something structural with the elevator for it to drop like that...

my 2 cents of course

Read the post above yours!

It's unfortunate that the radio can be made to act like that in a given situation. Funny thing is, if any of the new 2.4GHz radios/modules etc. showed to do the same, the public would be all over that brand, damning it for a "twich" like that.

It came straight from David's mouth, someone else switched on and shot him down. They may not have had the channel pin, but thats just speculation. I'm sure it was all just an accident, but it sucks none the less.

you honestly think someone is going to fess up to that? It only takes a split second to turn on and then realize you dont have the pin...its happened to me. I have also seen where people have landed, and shutoff the transmitter before the engine has shutdown or the reciever sutdown....can you say' out of control?'

I'm sure the speed was close to over 100 mph but when you see the turbine and ect. expelled from the plane after impact my opinion is that the turbine be ejected is what caused the crash what ever holds the turbine in place might have snapped or broken and caused the cg to shift forward. But that is my impossible opinion.

That's an awful scary crash. However, if you're going to destroy your pride and joy, there's no better way than in front of all your buddies in such a spectacular fashion, with people videotaping.

Yea, well what some say and what others say is whatever. Duplicate it with a 10X and see it for yourself. It was an isolated incident and thankfully no one was hurt. Could it have been worse, sure, but how much worse than if QQ's or Curtis's full power stuff gave way at the flightline? I know what my eyes saw, I was there. No ground effect, no flutter, no turbine falling out... just a momentary blip of down. All failsafe was set correct, throttle cut, hold everything else. What David posted (Toro's post, TY Toro) IS the reason for the crash. So please stop the speculation. If you want to read whats already been assumed, go to the other site (U) and read there. Thank you.

I had stuff happen before that I origionally thought I was shot down, but it turned out not to be so.

I'm not wishing to start an argument, I'm just saying that they said themselves that they were able to recreate what happened. They may not have known it at the time, but through testing they were able to recreate the incident.

As for the scanners, if someone switched on their radio for a second then switched it off again how would anyone know? I'll bet you the guys on the scanners (who did an unbelievably good job) were watching the direction of the loud explosion when it happened and didn't look at the scanners until moments later....
