| Super Contributer ![]() | WOW!!! Entirely to dam close for comfort! First things first you need learn RISK MANAGEMENT!! Next I thing you need to learn the rules of a good AMA Chartered flying field, and then you might want to think about when you got certified to fly turbine jets that's if you were even CERTIFIED... Not a good idea to have spectators so close to the runway.....Rules are there for a reason, use them!! |

| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | On two occasions in some 40 years of flying I've found myself with a model headed straight for someone and on both occasions I haven't hesitated to sacrifice the model rather than just cross my fingers and hope. The first time was about 25 years ago at an organized glider meeting in a public park. A couple of little kids ran onto the landing area just as I was coming in for a landing and there's no way I could have guaranteed to avoid them by trying to turn away (low on flying speed but even at a few mph, a fairly pointy glass nose could do nasty things to a soft child's head). The second time was just a couple of weeks ago when I was harriering down the runway/flight line about 15 yards out and a very strong "from nowhere" freak gust of wind caught the plane and blew it directly towards the pilot standing next to me. On both occasions I just poled forwards and drove the model into the ground. I *could* have just gassed the plane I was flying a couple of weeks ago and trusted that the engine wouldn't have hesitated or that I didn't get a momentary RC lockout at that time but that's a risk I wasn't prepared to take. models are nowhere near as valuable as friends so I drove it into the tarmac and don't regret it for an instant. That bird is matchwood now but my friend is fit and well -- all he noticed was bits of balsa flying past his ankles :-) I hate to think what would have happened if he'd ended up with a nasty prop chewing up his face. I think if you fly RC models you've got to be very much aware that sooner or later, no matter how careful you are, there may come a time when you have to make a decision like this and (if necessary) sacrifice your model in the name of safety. It *should* be instinctive and not something you have to think about -- because even a second's hesitation could have nasty consequences. |
