Badass! First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

Ok.. so My new best pal Clayton who made me my shock flyer for the JR indoor fest opened my eyes to modern foamie construction, and how to save weight.

He built me a F3A shock flier that came in at 5oz and is a blast.

Well I had an extra eflite 300 laying around, and I accidentally bought a few sheets of foam... and BAM.. I had an airplane.

I downloaded tiled plans for a morphed QQ brio foam style.

I enlarged the wings by 3.5", dropped the sharp leading edge, (made it more like the angle on the F3A shockie) and then dropped all the CF except 1 spar running down the center of the wing.

Using the slick fishing line support system I learned from Mr. Clayton, I did the same on this plane.

Well without going nuts with lightening holes and even painting this sucker with my old Creatix Lexan RC car paints I got this sucker in at 5.9 oz....

So with the eflite 300 and a 3 cell this sucker will be fun as hell!!

I hate to say it, but i had fun building this....

Oh yea.. no CA was used... Just UHU.... that stuff rules.
and it flexes.. so no cracked foam!

I may... if I have the motivation mill this design out, and take all unneeded foam out of it and see how lite I can get it, but that will be after this Saturdays Dome session so I can see how this sucker flies!

PS: I attached the tiled Brio plans... which I take NO credit for what-so-ever...
The guy who did it is listed.. so any thanks forward to him!

what servos did you use? They look like Eflite S75s. If they are, you could use smaller servos such as the Dymond D47s or GWS Picos and then remove the case to reduce the weigh even more. You flying in the Columbus dome Sat? I am trying to go, and it is my birthday, so we'll see if dad'll let me go . . .Will have my design there - a bipe at 5 oz.Seth

They seem to slow the plane a little in down lines, and stabilize the plane in high alpha.
I think it because they are towed in a smidge so they "center the plane. And on KE it really seems to help lock in th plane. I had a yak without them and it was OK but a bit squirrelly, when Clayton made my F3a with these, it was rock solid. SO if it worked once.. I will continue to use them.

VER 2...

There is a snow storm on my floor.
Milling foam is not that hard...

And I didn't really make templates.. I just drew lines and went at it.
Its not as pretty as some guys milling jobs... but this plane is still a prototype,
so I just want the weight off.

As you can see the fuse is MUCH taller now... should help it get that real nice KE.

Foam is all fun and games, but it will slow down next week when I start to finish my Dalton and my Carden 330...

But if I kill one of these and have to build another, might as well make it fun!
