Default foamie servos

Is it any problem to CA servos to the wing of a foamie, intead of cutting a hole in the wing to glue them to? I've always cut a hole, but got to thinking about geometry.....

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris, There is some question about this approach, but I have been successfully flying my DWfoamies BAF Yak with this method and with over 30+ flights my servos have not come loose.
I used hot glue on them and then ran strapping tape over the servo and against the foam for extra support. Actually I think the geometry is better with it against the wing.
I would imagine this has been used with sub 6 oz foamies as well.

hope this helps, what plane are you thinking of doing this?

After setting up my gasser I have been thinking about putting some masking tape around the servo and then gluing that to the wing. Works for keeping things tied down in the big airplanes right?

That's the only thing I've ever done with my foamies. CA all the servos to the foam. I've done this to my 16oz foamie as well and I've put some hard flights on it with no prob.

On all of my foamies, including my sub 4 oz foamies, I hot glue my servos in place. Just a thin bead on each side of the servo, top and bottom is all you need. You can actually use a little less than that if you cut the holes for the servos tight.

Heres a pic too.

Thanks for the info!

Here's some pics of what I'm talking about.

I've always built it like this:

I'm considering doing this:

I've had hot glue melt before, so I use either CA or Sumo glue.

Thanks!
Chris

Well my own experience with hot glue didn't work out all that well. Now it may be that I just put too much on the servos, but when I had a gear wear problem with two of the four servos (don't bother with Eflite 75's) I wound up destroying the foam where the servos were mounted trying to get them off.

Now I use the double sided tape like DW sells with their combo stuff. You have to be a bit careful about which double sided tape you use however. The normal stuff found at Home Depot and the like did not work well, but the industrial grade of the 3M thin double sided tape works well.

The problem with servos is that the case is a smooth surface, so you have to roughen them up in order to get them to stick, which is fine if you do not want your servos to come out shining in the light

Them ethod I use is to wrap the servo with electrical tape a few times, then I put the glue onto the tape, then the accelerator onto the surface, and when the two come together BAM! Instant mounted servo Be sure to get everything centered first though, or else you may have to break the servo free.

This works good for the larger outdoor foamies, but for the indoor ETOC type that adds a ton of weight to the plane, I used to use CA, but makes a mess all over the servo cases, and the hot glue just peels away, and I've never had a problem with them coming loose, even with my large outdoor 15 oz foamies.
