Hey guys i have a slite issue here and i need some help. I am currently flying a 27% H9 Cap with a DA50 on it with a NX 23x8 prop with a SuperSonic pitts style muffler. When i last sound tested this setup i was at 98db. Since then i have had to adjust the needles and of course the engine has broken in a little more. I have been getting alot of complaints about noise at the local flying field one of which the guy was harrassing me and insisted that i could put a cannister on my aircraft. which will not happen cause you cant do it. Im spinning 6400rpm and my latest sound check was 103db. The sound check was done IAW the ama rules 10ft away and 12in off the ground. I need to do something not just for the local field but for IMAC contests. I have thought about going with a carbon 23x8 but was not sure if that would quiet it down enough. I have also though about going to a three blade carbon but i dont want to sacrifice the performance i have with the 2 blade. I could change out mufflers and go with a slimline pitts but dont want to rebalance the plane and have to possibly add lead to the nose etc. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as i am one of three gassers at the local field and do not want to have to find another place to fly!!! Thanks, Rob |

Normally a CF prop will be slightly quieter than a wood prop. Your best bet is to try to borrow a few different brands or sizes from other pilots until you find the desired one

The NX props are some of the loudest. I know a Mej is going to be quieter you may also check into a Vess prop. I run a 3 blade on my 150 and it does a great job of keeping it quiet. Yes I do lose some performance but it is better than not being able to fly at all. Shawn |

go with g-money. cheat.when you test it hold your hand slightly over the unit, or tilt it down. i've gotten quite good at this, as this is also a problem at my local field.why spend $ when you can cheat.or... don't give it quite full throttle

I have a Vess 23a on my fifty. I haven't had it on a db meter but I can tell you that it is quiet. A .60 size glow is louder.

I invited a guy up to our Field last weekend and he made some stack extensions with holes drilled in the front. They were designed for full scale and they worked very well. I'll see if I can get him on here or at least where he got the design from. Noise issues are here to stay and will get tighter. Apparently no one is making more land. I am the noise police at my field and have been now for 2 years. We should all strive to make our planes as quiet as possible while still attaining our flight performance. It is easily possible and only requires some planning.

Dude 103 DB is ear splitting!! Al at Jtec does have some killer in cowl mufflers. But that in itself isn't going to do the trick. The prop is making a ton of noise as well. There is also the option of running a Bud Light can exposed. Super cheap and it would look kinda cool. It's always tough when you have an airplane flying and you find out you need to retrofit for quiet. But the bottom line is it's a reality. Clubs who don't have a noise regulation better get cracking! No matter where you have a flying field, there will be a subdivision coming to your area (if they build within a mile, they WILL complain.) Edge 540, the noise you're talking about can be cool for a demo but if that junk went on all day long it would SUCK! My favorite prop ripper story was TEAM STEK. The Stek clan always came to the Nall with 40 brand new gassers. They were of the thought that you need to have an 18X3 on a 150 (straight mufflers) and fly WIDE OPEN ALL THE TIME! I'll never forget sitting on the patio behind the hangar and hearing team Stek crank up. Then young Eagle Matt flew that darn thing WAO ripping the prop like nobody's business. Pat went LOCO!!! "You take my golf cart to the flight line RIGHT NOW and tell whoever is flying that damn red airplane to KNOCK IT OFF NOW!!!!!" I think folks in Florida got a migrane from team Stek's break in proceedure!! OUCH!!
