Brave, I am VERY! interested in how your engine mount/clearance with the cowl is working out. I am going to build a similar size P-51 from plans and have been struggling with DA-50/G62 engine choice. Really the only thing holding me back from the 62 is cowl issues. Would love to see some pics if possible. Thanks Mike Morgan

At the time of my asking my question concerning which engine to use, I have learned probably more than I needed to. However, it's all very useful info. to know. I went ahead with the G62 and have added a 90 degree carb. intake manifold, from Toni Clark, very awesome and tucks the carb, into the coweling, I have also added a spring start to the back plate that makes starting very very fun and easy. My plane comes in at just under 23 lbs. with a sullivan smoke system, 24 oz. smoke tank, and no retracts at this time and flys like a dream. I am running a jinger 22-14 just fine. Have ran a 3W 22-8 as well with no probs. I don't know at this time what rpm is at but with that much torque I'm ok with it for now. The madien flight was done with a 24" prop. and yes it flew great but it was a total accident. Because of smoke, I have obvisouly installed a inverted Pitts muffler w/smoke which really required lots of cutting of the cowel...... augh. There wasn't enough room behind the engine to mount a canister and I wasn't about to rake out the cash to go custom. Besides, I painted the muffler to match the cowel and I'm fine with that. The plan looks as great as it flys. If you can afford it, go custom on the muffler to make it fit, or you may be able to make the wrap around work if you can space your engine far enough away from the firewall and isolation mount. Talk to the guys at Bisson mufflers for that. The only cutting you would have to do is for the spark plug area, but other then that, you can fit a G62 into the coweling with very little cutting. I will take some picts to back this up soon.......... |

Great news Brave! I have MAN-0700 plans to the Stephen Scotto P-51. It was designed for a 120 with a 74" span, but I am going to enlarge the plan to about 85" and use available accessories such as cowling and canopy from one of the fiberglass cowling people for a 1/5 mustang. I want this aircraft to be more of a flyer than a scale piece, but I still want to minimize cowling cuts. This news will actually allow me to start accumulating parts for my plane as I can. I thought about installing a can muffler in the fuse running it out the back of the scoop, but I'll have some time to think about that. I'd be interested in your pics! Thanks again. Mike

Ralph , you got any of those Tony Clark 90 degree carb castings? I have a Skyshark P-40 that I want to shoehorn in there and it would be nice not to have to cut the cowl. I have another G-62 for you to convert my real soon. |

Some confusion here...I make carb ROTATORS, don't have any Toni Clark 90 degree adapters.. Wish I did, the price is a little high...

I don't think that anybody makes one, Dont know for sure but have not seen one. The ones that I have seen was a modified header for a DA50 to fit the G62. There is one around from China that is a flex pipe but do not know how well they are holding up. Milton |

yea the stock g-62 is a little heavy but over all its great. i know with mine i added the spring starter from B&B and after priming till its good and wet it starts on the 2nd/ 3rd try. just a little fyi.. all the 90 deg. card addapters i have seen or have read about has been a little hard to get the carb adjusted just right. I doint use them i have enough room in my extra that my carbs all right. i do use a power ram from B&B though, i have a small hole in the side of my cowl for the power ram to stick though but its not much.

With out any tunning of the pipe, I just bolted everything together and went from about 7000rpm to 7600 rpm on a menz-s 23x8. According to the pipe manufacturer and other experts, I still need to shorten my pipe by a few more inches.
