anyone try a Greve Pipe on the DA85? It would probably have better throttle response.

I have only heard them on a DA150, They make the engine have a mean sound. The throttle response is fine from what I heard

It matters not a whit which brand pipe you try -if the pipe or canister is a mismatch for the prop load - the midrange will suffer.

My little 12x12ft study (building room) makes this process a little painful! Install will hopefully be done this weekend and will take a little more effort than expected, but well worth it I am sure!

DA is AWESOME. They sent me the incorrect header (no flex) by mistake and I emailed them Sunday evening about this. UPS showed up Wednesdaywith the package! That's just 2 days from DA receiving the email until I received the correct header in Canada! Nice work Jeff

Have you run the combo in the fuse yet? I would love to see video of the pipe in action even if just ground tests! Do you think the full tunnel was necessary? I am just going to have an exit hole with a lip at the front of the exit hole to create a low pressure causing it to draw air out of the fuselage.

Shaun,
No chance to run it up yet - probably next weekend if all goes well. Will grab the camera (still and vid) and see what I can get. The DA has yet to be run, so it will not be like those who are already running a broke in engine...

This is very interesting but Ive never run a pipe before. Will be getting a EF 110" Yak soon but not sure of what motor I want for it. The prototype is 28lbs but thats with the 100 and MTW cans. Anywhere I can go to get a good general tutorial on setup and installation ? I was all set on the 100 but.........

Joe I reccomend that you move in with Mr. Dick Hanson for your apprentiship!!

The best way to set up a pipe is to let someone else buy all the props and work it out through the header length/pipe. THis is mostly why people are having such great luck in the last year with the DA-50/pipe setup. Someone did all the homework.

http://www.bmb-daempfer.de/

The download page

http://www.bmb-daempfer.de/Download/DrehzahlangabenBMB.xls This is a good chart that you can match your expected rpm with tuning length.

http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.bmb-daempfer.de/

I got this help from Ian Howard (DA-Australia) some time ago. He used these charts to help him get his DA-85 to swing....6600 on Mejzlik prop 28x10. For those looking to use the single in the new 110 inch yak we are talking about pushing 60 lbs of thrust.

Here is a quote from his email to me.

""
I had the BMB 70mm tuned pipe. I made the header from KS 28mm diameter elbows. Total length from exhaust port to baffle was 85cm. (33.5".) This was chosen based on their graph and I expected to prop it for around 6500 RPM. There have been several generations of the BMB pipes and the distance to the baffle varied on each one, but the distance from the exhaust port has remained constant.

The BMB pipes have proven to work very well but I have been disappointed with the build quality. I have sold quite a few of them but at least half of them have developed cracks at the joins. I have for the moment decided not to continue with them.

Good luck and have fun.

Ian""

6500 rpm on a 28x10 is a lot of power. Get the DA85 on KS1090 pipe Your EF yak would come out at around 26.5lb!

I should be running my setup in the plane next weekend and I am sure a lot of other guys will be to so if you are patient this will give you some more results to assess.

One of Chrisbchips comments:

""For comparison, a DA100 on cannister mufflers will turn a mejzlik 28x10 at 6200-6300rpm. A DA100 on pipes will swing a 28x10 at 6500rpm on a good day. The 85 will turn a 28x10 at 6500 on a tuned pipe. This is because the porting on the motor has been designed for getting the most power out of a tuned pipe. So on a stock or cannister muffler the 85 will only turn a 26x10 at 6500. But it comes to life on a pipe.
Hope this helps!
Chris B."
