3rd time to the field this season... when will summer come.

hey Shaun......

I saw your video and was wondering , what the all up weight of the airplane was with the DA-85 and pipe installed? Power looked awesome....very impressed!

also...i haven't had a chance to go back though the entire thread and read it yet , but how did you end up mounting the tuned pipe? Did you open the belly up and make a pipe tunnel for it? I think this is the long tuned pipe correct....about 30-32" long.

If you have any pics of the pipe install that would be awesome!

great job on getting that sucker dialed in man!

Hi guys,

watching Sprice50's video it seems the performance is perfect but the noise is WAY too high for our local noise-restricted flying fields.

What would I have to do to halve the noise, and can anyone give a guess as to the power hit that would come with the noise reduction?

TIA!

Ken.

Ken, it is way quieter if you don't pin it I was just having a little fun. It has unlimited vert below the ripping throttle level.

Run a 28x12 mej. That would get you down in the 6100 range I would think plus at the 1/3 to 1/2 throttle you would have better speed range. This thing is a brute. I may just run the 28x12 myself at the local club which is also sensitive. The vid was at a private field.

I keep saying 26lb to be conservative but maybe 25.5lb considering I have single 5955 per serface. Have to get access to a decent scale!

For full install pics see posts #191-193 Made sure I documented it to make it really simple for everyone else!

Shaun,
How is throttle response with the 28x12 and thoughts on 3D? Mine with the 28x10 Mej feels great - I just have to keep it under 1/2 to 2/3 throttle when the noise police are around... I'm going on 4 gallons with my setup and it's been an incredible combo... Synth is coming up soon and it's only getting better... Still no AUW for my 35% Extra - should weight it some time...

I'm glad to see some airframe designers are focusing on the DA-85/tune pipe setup for the 35% area. QQ's new Yak is a prime example of what appears to be a drop in for a combo like this...

Haven't tried a 28x12 yet. Won't be flying much at that field so not too worried about it.

Have you tached it lately? I have 2 gallons through mine and should tach it soon.

Please tach and temp before switching to synth so we can get a good comparison.
QQ's Yak looks great but I am not sure if the tunnel is big enough for the KS, looks like it is meant for Greeves. A post in the DA170 thread said the member spoke to
DA who mentioned the Greeves was little peaky:
3w 170 or DA 170?

Not sure though. I have never tried one.

The report was that the KS was a little peaky not the Greeves. In a later discussion it was said to be fixable with a longer header.

always the "longer header".
here is a secret --
more pipe volume reduces peakiness -this, plus PROPER length , will make for smooth power
I have a box of small diameter pipes I once tested -- which I don't use . the setup Shaun used on the video looked right -
IF you really want to save space go for a non tuned large muffler can.
the small dia "tuned"stuff in my book -is just too fussy.
Why?
for one - the larger volume allows full flow of the extraction pulse bigger is in this case , better as it lets the outgoing pulse pull in more fuel mix . (that's what makes the power) ---
two it helps control temperature and pipes -as they heatup, become effectively shorter .
but what the ---k, go with what fits -then try and figure out why it does not work as advertised.

So how do you really feel Dick Glad you like the KS1090 setup though

Good info for all to read as you have years of experience. You should get one of these setups!
