Guys..... I started saving my pennies for a new DA-85 to slap onto the front of my 35% WH Sukhoi and have decided to go with the KS95 canister and single header. i know the 85 runs well on this set up from the threads i have read but i have read in some other threads that to make this motor really come alive , you need to be running a tuned pipe. I know Krumscheid but the damn things are like 30" friggin long! Obviously there are made to be used on larger engines like the DA 150 , Kroma 180 , 3W 170 and so forth , and will need a large airframe that can support a 30" pipe. This is what i don't get....... If the DA-85 was built to really and perform at it's best on a tuned pipe , what airframe could actually take advantage of this??.....none that i know of , but that's why i'm asking. Couldn't some company make a shorter version tuned pipe between like 15"-20" that could be used on dozens of different airframes to take advantage of the power the DA-85 could possibly produce? seems like there is a need for one of these , correct me if i'm wrong. |

That's one of the disadvantages of a large single cylinder engine. Tuned pipes are tuned to a specific length for a specific RPM. Depending on the RPM you are trying to tune for, the pipe length required for an 85cc single may need to be longer than those required for a 150cc twin, because each cylinder is only 75cc. Too short of a pipe and it will not be tuned, and may do more harm than good. Dennis |

Yeah , that is what i was thinking as well. Basically the DA-85 is 1/2 of what the new DA-170 will be , that could run the tuned pipes in a larger airframe , same goes with the 3W-85 and 3W-170 as well. I'm wondering if there are any airframes out there either in a Yak , Extra 260 or 300 in a lighter 35% airframe that could take advantage of the DA-85/tuned pipe set up? Honestly , i don't think it would be all that difficult to open up the belly on something like that and lengthen the pipe tunnel if it has one , or modify it to fit a longer tuned pipe. hhhmmm??.......maybe a project for this summer sometime. |

The kit mfgrs are going to appeal to the flyers who "bolt together and go fly" face it , that is the current market. There are a lot of "tuned cans etc., which work -not as well as the big pipes but for most users avoiding any real installation work is pretty important . You also have to match the prop load and type of flying you do. | ||||||||||||||||||
