Hi Rusty,
According to a lot of two stroke people running a motor in without muffler/s on it will help the motor run in faster, apparently less back pressure better honing effect the ring has on the bore, in saying that running them in with mufflers or cans on will not hurt the engine or pipe in any way it will just take marginally longer to run in.

That's what I thought..

I did read somewhere that is was bad to do so, but I can't really see any difference. I will be running in the new engine for my extra on a canister anyway. Howie recomends 10L on mineral oil and I ran 20L on the DA50 in the Ultimate and it is as strong as anything. So I'm sure that would be heaps even on a canister..

As long as you control the temperature - and vary the rpm - the exhaust system used means diddly squat .
Break in continues from first flip of the prop new till the engine is worn out - (a loooong time).
Any engine

That would be more like engine life.. Break-in is the term used for the intial bedding of the ring to the bore.

Of course - My comment has to do with how the engine is operated from day one - there is no magic moment when you can change from carful adjustment to overloading it with prop, inadequate oils etc..
Rather than looking for some quick process-just operate the engine correctly and it is usable from the time you buy it - ask the mfgr.

Hey Rusty,
I'm running a KS Header/Canister on my BME Yak 54. All I have to say it puts out beautiful transistion and power. Here in NJ,I'm getting 7300RPM and only have a gallon through it. No worring about tuning it like a tuned pipe, perfect as is.. And the noise is just awesome so quite!!

later,
Frank

Sweet , thats what I wanted to hear. What size prop are you turning? What is the altitude in NJ? I was hoping to have the DA and can combo turning a 23x8 mejzlik in the high 6K -- low 7k range. Is that a reasonable estimate? I fly at sea level..

Hey Rusty,

Were like only 850' above sea level. Right now I'm running a Mejzlik 22x8 at 7300,so you should be turning where you were thinking. My friend Lafus Maximus also has the same setup in his Model Aviation Yak and is turning the same rpms on a NX 22x8 prop.So it's obvious I'm not just lucky. I just love the sound too thats the best part. I find it less distracting when I'm flying. It doesn't weigh anymore then my slimline pitts smoke muffler. And thats including the header and the canister.

Go for it!!
Frank

I got the MTW 75 can and header today. I will be running either a 22x8 bolly wood or 22x8 mejzlik for break-in and then switch to a 23x8.
