Bringing a 10 years old 3W 44% Ultimate back to life

Hello guys, my cousin and I are working on bringing a 10+ years old 3W 44% Ultimate with an old 3W 160 b4 engine back to life. My cousin got this plane as a gift; it was stored for over 10 years. The very first thing we did was changing the fuel lines and charging up the batteries to see if the engine would run. Half an hour later, she has started nicely and ran smoothly. So now it was shopping time. Here is a list of what we got so far.

-8x 8511 serves
-sc12 powerbox with 2x duralight 4000 battery packs for the receiver
-with sulvian smoke pump
-5” Dubro wheels
-Some wood to custom make a bigger rudder.

I will keep you guys posted as the project continues, for now; here are a couple of pictures of how she looks like right now.

I have previously owned a 160B4. Very Very smooth running engines. Good luck with the rebuild.

Love the pics, good luck on getting the old girl airborne again. Overlook nothing, revisit everything.

I gotta coment on the 14-15 or so radios on the shelf behind the plane in the last photo.....LOL. I have a shelf like that too.....where all the unloved ones go.

I see you have one of Geoff Combs planes sitting next to the Ulti. Nice. He is a friend of mine. Just thought it was cool to see that.

thanks for the comments guys.

bosshoss, the radios you see on the last pic are not mine, it's my friends RC shop, so all the radois and planes you see are owned by people just like me

Temptation, man, I thought I would never find out what brand this extra was, I finally thought it was 3W, but now that you mentioed Geoff Combs (duh it was right there on the plane) I searched on the net and finally found a couple of other extras that looked just like her . The extra will be our next project, more like next year or two project, this thing is heavy as hell, it also has 160B4 in it, but I am sure this will go and we would have to put a bigger engine in it.

thanks again guys

Ahmed

I think both of those planes came from Geoffs hanger.

That extra was designed by Geoff Combs and one of these was used by Steve Stricker to win the 1996 TOC. I have some pictures of that airplane some where from the 96 TOC. Geoff also had a yellow extra that was on an airtronics add on MA magazine. He had also designed a 30% ultimate that direct rc used to sell in the mid 90s. If I find the pictures I'll post them, you can see the small flying surfaces as compared to now.

wooow that’s awesome, what a history huh.

yeah I could not agree more, the flying surface on the extra is kindda weak, hell on the ultimate too, and that's why we are building a bigger rudder for it.

Ronbo, she is spining 32x10 menz but we have not tacked it yet, will let you know as soon as we do.

More pics to be posted soon guys.

Thanks

Ahmed

Abdullah, yes this is Saeed's shop.

I was at Alain hobbies club 6 days or so ago, I saw tareq and a couple of other guys there too, I had my 50cc yak and flew it there. I also got to see So3ood at the Airshow flying his katana.

I am sure the maiden flight will be done in Alain club since they closed down the Mina here in abu dhabi. I am hoping they will finish the ultimate up sometime this week.

will make sure to get more pics and also will do my best to get to maiden flight on tape.

thanks for the nice words guys

Ahmed
