Default Panzl ready to Maiden

I wanted to maiden my new JTec 35% Panzl this weekend... no such luck due to wind and other issues. Some time in the next few days.

I built this from a J'Tec Radiowave PAK kit. It's my first build.
There is a build thread in the J'Tec forum on RCU...

Paul Svec (NoLimitz) did the pilot. I did everthing else.

I am no master - not even an apprentice to be sure but it came out straight and looks good to me. There are lots of flaws... but in the future I will build, cover and paint better.

25lbs 9oz final weight. DA100, MTW TD 75K cans. Lots of carbon stuff took 2lbs off

Many thanks to Al, Kevin, Jim and others for tons of build help.
I'll post a video/report once she flys! This is my plane for this my first IMAC season. I plan (against all suggestions, offers of avice, good sense etc) to fly Intermediate.

Chris the planes looks very nice, I only have one suggestion. Open up the intake holes on the cowl a bit more, don't want that nice new engine to overheat. I still think that carbon ultracote is awesome. Glad to see theres finally no more snow on the ground by you. Good luck with it.

Kevin

P.S. I know you said it but I would strongly suggest starting in a lower class of IMAC for at least one contest. just so you dont get taken off guard with the unknowns.

Thanks Kevin.

The intakes are bigger than they look in the pics... the same volume as the ones on the Cap. That new Da temps in the 140's.

This is a proven DA... no new engine for the Panzl - something I know is working.

I am going through DA's unknowns catalog and flying as many as I can. I may score badly and frustrate a few judges but I'm okay with that. I certainly need practice but I just find flying the intermediate a lot more fun and interesting since you get in some more "unnatural feeling" orientations.

I'll fly basic, sportsman and int at our upcoming boot camp. I'll maybe change my mind after I get that feedback

That's an awesome weight for the Panzl!!! How did you get it so light?

Here's my set-up... and mine is heavier by a bit... wondering what you did different:
Carbon Spinner
Wood Prop
No Wheel Pants
8 x 5955
1 throttle & 1 choke
No power boxes, etc...
SWB rudder tray (added a bit of weight, but not as near as much as the diff BTW our planes!)
No pilot or dash
Carbon Wing and Stab Tube
RCBlimp Ti tail wheel
Second RX (1.5 ozs)
2 x Fromeco Peerless 2400 batts
2 x Fromeco regs
No switches (built into regs)
DA-100
Stock exhaust (right here I shoulda saved a pound!)

No real changes to the plane. Made a very light tank tray and a real light RX tray... that's it.

Can you post pics of any mods? Thanks

I didn't make any mods other than carbon fiber. I actually added weight because I used some more tri-stock and beefed up the formers even more than Al suggested.

I used titebond for 99% of the build. I only used Epoxy (Hysol) on the motor box as I am allergic to epoxies.

I also built a box for the canitsers and a mount for the fuel tank. I replaced all the soft stringers with harder balsa that probably added some weight too.

When I did the glue I very carefully covered every piece with a thin layer of titebond and then clamped in place. One of the old timer scratch builders here told me I could save a large amount of weight in correctly using the glue. But again - it might have saved a few oz, not lbs.

I used CF gear, CF wing tube, CF spinner (Pete), CF tailwheel (Pete), PSP Ti axles, CF wheel pants and Kavan 4" wheels. This saves more than 2lbs all up over stock.

I am using a single 5955 on rudder set up pull-pull mounted to some spruce rails.

I am using an Emcotec BIC for regulation and battery redundancy and Smartfly power expander sport. Single Spektrum AR7000 Rx.

I had Fromeco 2400 peerless but I have since changed to 2xFlightPower 2170 LiPo batteries as those 5955 servos are VERY thirsty for amps.

I did a lot of sanding on the wings and fuse before I covered. That might have saved an ounce or two - but I added probably 1/3 lb of extra wood ...

I sprayed the cowl white and covered the with Ultracote for the stripes and CF on top. Then clear coat... compared to painting all that I saved some weight. The cowl is very very thin on mine. You could easily crush it with your bare hands on the top and bottom. It is beefy in the front and around where it joins the fuse. I bet that saved a bunch of weight.

I guess I am lucky and got a light one... my GP Cap is similar size with 5" less wingspan but is 2lbs more (and apart from where I modified it it has no glue HA HA)... it flys light. I am really looking forward to flying the Panzl.

Been flying it tons this year. Way over 100 flights and flying at my first IMAC with it this weekend... great airplane. Other than ripping the gear out on a bad landing and fixing covering wrinckles it has been basically maintenance free. I have some video around somewhere... maybe I'll get some more this weekend.
