I have NIB 34% RC Superstore Extra and am thinking about building it with my ZDZ 80RV for power. My question is can it be built light enough WITH a cannister to be 3D worthy with the 80RV? I have a bunch of Hitec 5645's and TBM lipo's for radio gear. (its just a bunch of stuff that I already have and don't use so I thought it would find a good home in my knock around 3D plane) Is it safe to assume that all the radio gear and ignition batts and regs will be 48oz? And that the engine with prop spinner ign and mounts will be around 5 lbs? If thats the case then I think I can get it around 23#'s 12oz's and that should be O.K. for 3D. With a few carbon mods of course. Heres what I have so far..... Fuse and Hatch 5#'s 6.1oz's rudder and elev's 1# 10.8oz's wings 4#'s 10oz's wing and stab tube 13.1oz's canopy 6.7oz's landing gear 1# 5.5oz's wheel pants 6.2oz's fuel tank (complete) 4.3oz's hardware package (in kit) 8.3oz's wheels and axles 9.2oz's cannister muff (JMB for ZDZ 80) 15.5oz's Total 16#'s 15.7oz's Radio gear 3#'s Engine w/ign, mounts, and prop and spinner 5#'s Total again 24#'s 15.7oz's I can save 6oz on the wing tubes by going to C/F. 11.5oz on the gear by using my gear from my old H-9 330l And 3.2 on the wheels and axles by using what I have. Thats a savings of 1# 4.7oz's That should put me in the ballpark of 23#'s 11oz's. Again, that is assuming that radio gear will be 3#'s and motor/prop/mount and spinner will be 5#'s. Is this possible? Also does anyone have any experience with this plane and is it reliable enough to put the work into to end up with a nice flying plane? Thanks for any input. BF |

A buddy of mine had the CHP version which, as far as I know, is identical except for the covering. His was around 27lb's with an old 3W 100 and a smoke system. I think 24-25lb's may be a more realistic weight for you. It will be fine for 3D, but not ridiculous power. I would highly recommend not using the CA hinges. After about 15-20 flights and losing an aileron and an elevator half (seperate flights), he ended up rehinging the whole plane. When building the plane, he called up Chip concerned about the hinges and got his 'recommended' procedure. So much for that.. I wouldn't trust CA hinges on any glow plane larger than a 40-sized, nevermind a 100cc class... The CHP Extra was covered in chinacote and the first weekend he used the smoke system half the covering fell off.. AWESOME flying plane, though.

I flew a superstore extra all last season using the blue radio south hinges with no problems. It was 27.5 with all of the stock hardware and a DA100. I would definately heat the iron up and weld the covering on. I hit hard early on and had minimal covering issues. Also I would put a strip of clear over the leading edge covering to keep the seem from popping. I did crack the wing leading edge sheeting from to many highspeed walls. I attepted to fix it and the the leading edge covering seem popped along with the sheeting during a horizontal snap combo. It blew the wing right off of it. That being said the wings were fine until yours truly got addicted to high speed walls.(stupid stupid)! It was a good plane for pattern and 3D. Even though it looks really long it will tumble with the best of them.

I have the chip hyde version of this plane, it only took 5-8 flights with smoke to mess up the covering so bad that the only soulution was to recover the whole plane with monokote. other than covering problems, it fliys very nice and 3Ds nicely. mine is powered by DA-100 tho, and it seems to be just enough for this plane with smoke and stock hardware. good luck. I have the planes Plus version of this plane. mine weighed in at 27# with DA100 nimh batteries, 645mg's in the wing ans 945mg's in the tail. I used a kevlar pull pull system on the rudder, changed the crappy ca hinges out for robarts, no wheel pants, and I didn't use the stock hardware. I also put clear vynal over ALL of the covering overlaps. my wings fell apart after like 15 flights. pro1foam cut me new cores and it will maiden tomorrow hopefully.(weather is crappy here)

Good luck on the maiden rcpilot. What happened to the wings? What do you mean by "they fell apart"? Built wrong or not enough glue? Any to check it out before flying? BF |

BF, my wings fell apart from not enough glue from what I could see. sheck out the thread: PP extra 34% needs new wings! for the problem and then see: PP EXTRA 34% FOAM CORE WINGS ARE ON A ROLL!! for the solution. it's pretty much imposible to tell about your wings just check them for loose wood at the end of every day. it didn't take long for me to figure out I had a problem.

BF, I have the ARC version of this plane. I got a Brison 5.8 to power it. Haven't figured out how to cover it yet. Should end up being 27# when all is said and done. Bruce

I have the PP version with a BME 110, Hitec 5955's all around and Fromco lions. It weighs 23lbs 10ozs dry and flys extremely light, the ZDZ 80 should fly the snot out of it and should be around 23lbs also.
