Default 3D Hobby Shop 85" Katana - Assembly Thread

Hey Fellas,

3D Hobby Shop is proud to announce the new 85" Katana. We've been designing smaller 47" and 55" airplanes for approaching 2 years now with great success, and this new Katana is our first 50cc design. Let's get the ball rolling on the build and fly thread with some specs...

__________________________________________________ ___

Katana 85" ARF
Big Wing Area - Light Weight - Flexible Power
3DHobbyShop has again teamed up with Scott Stoops to provide excellent performance in a top-quality ARF.

WingSpan 85"

Wing Area 1340 sq. in.

Weight Gasoline 50CC 14.5-15.5 lbs.

Weight Electric 12S 15-16 lbs.

Servos (5) 150oz/in or larger (250 oz/in on rudder)

Wing Tube Carbon Fiber

Stab Tube Carbon Fiber

Landing Gear Aluminum

Included HardwareBall-Link

Phenolic horns

Pipe Tunnel2 1/8" x 5" x 15"

Featuring bolt-on removable stabs, an extensive top-quality hardware package, hinge-point type hinges, bolted aluminum firewall attachment, carbon tailwheel, quad wing-bolt system, pre-assembled motor-box, ring-mounted fiberglass cowl, large removable top-hatch, and much more, the 3DHobbyShop 85" Katana is an outstanding 85" aerobatic ARF. Capable of precise maneuvers in a wide speed range, the Katana is also a 3D monster featuring rock-free upright and inverted harriers, really easy locked-in hover, low-coupling knife-edge, and gentle stall characteristics. Easy to assemble, you can be flying after just a few evenings of work. Best off, this Katana builds LIGHT. A typical 50CC gas setup with stock muffler will come in between 14.5 and 15lbs. With some weight-saving parts, under 14.5 Lbs. is possible.

Two SERVOPACKS are available for this airplane - Standard and HD. The standard has 4 x 150 oz. in MG digital servos + 1 5955TG for the rudder. The HD pack is all 5 HS-5955TG for the ultimate in performance. We recommend the HD Servopack for all gasoline applications and electric above 3KW.

Unpacking the boxes, this is what we have. The airplane is triple boxed and everything is well protected...

Part of our development process is simplifying the assembly process as much as possible, and this includes a pre-installed firewall and a preglued/painted canopy.

Looks great! I like the pinned firewall with the Alum. I know from taking a Carden Edge to the Love Air Fest one year, that everything built in Colo. is light. It does look light for sure. Huge elevators!

We've learned a lot of things about designing 3D airplanes by making them fly well at altitude. At 14.5 pounds with a 50cc engine, it really flies well at 5500' MSL at my field North of Denver.

Our Katana also incorporates a really thin 10% wing that virtually eliminates wing rock in upright harrier, and allows an incredibly fast pitch transition for clean walls and waterfall. We've been using that wing for a while on smaller 2-5 pound models, so we're absolutely ecstatic that it works just as well on 50cc models.
