If you have cracked aluminum spinner and you have to fly with it, use small drill bit ( like # 60 ) and right at the end of the crack drill thru the spinner, debur the hole so there is no sharp edges. It is called stop drilling
It is important that on the spinner cut outs , there is no sharp edges or rough edges, with the vibration that is a good place for crack to start.

The new Cowl and spinner are here. I'm taking a day off to fit the cowl, no point rushing it. I had a neat idea to make the dozen little ply blocks you need to join the cowl halves. You have to drill a hole in each one for the blind nut.

I didn't want to waste any time so I cut all the blocks on the band saw with the fence and the sled. Then I had to put a hole in each one. Things this small are a PITA in a drill press. So I came up with a little jig:

There is pocket that fits the block. Its too shallow to hold the block so you can pull it back out. The piece across the top keeps the clock from crawling up the drill bit when it pops through the other side.

Took longer to post this than it did to make the blocks. Back to work!

Gareth, I just saw that you had a mishap tonight. Sorry to see that happen, but glad to see it didn't ruin the airframe.

Story of interest:

At my first IMAC this year, I had my spinner blow while at full or close to full power. I have this problem where I over-tighten blots over and over when I check them.. I mean HAD this problem.. the bolt that holds the Tru-Turn spinner on snapped off right where it goes into the prop shaft. The spinner was smacked by my 2 blade prop and never found. you should have heard the noise! It ruined the spinner and prop. I have not used a spinner since, but am considering getting a Carbon one for my 260.

hey man I had a spinner explode at muskogee and luckfully it just exploded and completely ripped free from the plane. no damage to any thing but the prop.

I hope you can get it back together soon that was a nice plane and flew really nice too!

Thanks guys. I have been thinking a lot about this trying to decide what to do for next season.

I did 3 test flights and the new spinner cracked and the stacks broke on the muffler. Big thanks to Greg and his wife Terry for getting me a muffler so I could fly in the contest. I finished 8th. Slimline and Tru-Turn have stepped up to replace the broken parts with new stuff they are designing.

The bottom line is: I need to fly more. I maybe got 30 flights on the airframe this year. Here's what I'm going to do about it:

* Buy a trailer
* Sell the DA-85 and buy a DA-100

I'm sure the motor will be great in another lighter airframe, like a QQ 101, on a full tuned pipe. i just don't have the space in this airframe for that unless it was built in from the start. the 85 on mufflers doesn't have the same pull as a DA-100. Also a pipe would throw off the balance even more and I already have 8oz of weight in the nose.

I'll have an add up in the swap shop soon if anyone wants the motor.

but... wouldn't it have been easier to drill the holes first... then cut the blocks?

Drilling into a larger piece would be easier.....I would think....

man thats bad news abt the DA85 bud!Ill be building mine arround a 85 with a tuned pipe and will take note to keep the back end light!might alter the design a little to loose some off the fat end

my 40% is nearly ready to rock!

craig77, the motor will be nice on a tuned pipe. In that case don't put the rudder servo in the tail like mine. Also check the CG before you cover and if its off you can lighten the rudder and elevators like they do on the Dalton's.

Its just too much work for me to do now. In my case the move to the 100 will be the safest bet.
