Default Krill 28% Katana - need header and canister suggestion

Hey Guys,

I picked up a 28% Krill Katana, and I'm going to be using a DA-50 for power. I'm having trouble finding much information on this aircraft online, so I figured I'd ask my question here while I wait for the epoxy on the motor box to dry.

I need some help figuring out what header and Canister to install.

A fellow I know used a MTW TDH 75 Canister in his with a flex header. Is there any difference between using a flex header and a solid header? If I go with a solid, I need to know whether to order the 0mm, 25mm, or 50mm drop.

Also, should I go for front exit? or rear exit? Are there any pros or cons of either? I've never used anything other than a pitts style muffler, so all this stuff is new to me.

Right now I'm waiting for the epoxy to dry on the motor box, so I can't really dry fit things together to figure out exactly what header drop I'll need. Like I said, I figured I'd ask here to see what others have done.

Thanks a bunch,

Tom

Hi Tommy!

How are you going to mount your engine? I just finished my 28% Katana with DA50 mounted cylinder down. When mounted that way the perfect header is doublebend header with 25mm drop. Oh, and I don't know if the 'normal' drop direction is towards the plug or what because when I first ordered a 25mm drop header from KS they managed to send me a header that had drop towards the carb of the engine... Ofcourse it didn't fit at all... But the second try I got the 25mm drop to the other direction and it fits just right.

I am using a KS1060 tuned silencere on my Katana and so far after 4 flights I am very impressed with the performance. Katana is surprisingly sleek flyer thanks to its thin wing profile, but yet it can be flown soo slow because of the huge wing area.

Mine ended up at 18.6 lbs (8450g)

You really can't see the header from my pictures that well, but I hope that the idea can be seen.

Hey nolimitz.
I've seen that site. The trouble is that it doesn't really help me figure out what to order. I assume that that is a flex header. Is that correct?

Hey Matti!
Thanks for the pictures. That helps.
I guess I need to figure out if I want to mount my engine at an angle or fully
inverted.

Do you have any suggestions about going with a tuned pipe vs a simple Canister? Do you think the model needs a tuned pipe?

Tom

tuned pipe vs canister is a bit difficult to answer, but I have a feeling that when I moved the DA50 from
colombo anderson 27% extra (15.5lbs and KS86 canister) to the Katana with KS1060 pipe, I got very similar power to weight ratios between these setups.

But I am sure though that Katana with a DA50 and a pipe has a plenty of power. It actually feels allmost too good in the air to be true.

With the canister it could be just a bit limited on power but for sure it should fly just fine. What I like about my Katana is its sleek feeling in the air. It really gets airspeed up easily probably because of the relatively thin airfoil and you could easily be doing crazy big loops with the canister setup as well no doubt about that.

I actually chose to mount engine inverted just because it was easier for me to order a suitable header from Germany... Didn't have to draw sketches and try to describe the header i need.

tommy,
prototype flew with DA 50 with JMB header ( solid one,not flex ) and in fuse silencer ( 60/60/ 270 ). Engine was mounted in approx 45 degree, so header came right in the middle of fuselage. Personally I don't think this plane needs a tuned pipe.

In case it helps anyone in the future,

Just like Olli said, A double bend wraparound header with a 25mm drop works great.

The MTW TD75 Can also fits well. The stinger comes out just forward of the landing gear.

Thanks for the help here guys... if anyone wants pictures of a 50cc Krill Build in the future, gimme a shout.

Tom
