I just ordered the sd model yak 54 from TBM. The HP version , orange color with checkers. I was hoping I could hear your thoughts and feelings on this plane. I will be putting my spare ZDZ 80 RV silver head in it. How does the plane fly? I plan on putting 4 JR ds8411's on the ailerons, 2 jr ds 8711's on the elevator, and 2 8711's on the rudder. Using the JR x9303 2.4GHz and will be using the JR r921 rx. Should I use a power expander? Do I need lipos or can I use NiMh and NiCd? This is my 2nd gasser and first I will be assembling myself. Please, any suggestions, advice, or info is encouraged and welcomed. I would LOVE to see pics of your 33% sd models yak's guys. Inside and out! |

Jason, I have the same plane. I am using a 3W 80XI with a XOAR 26x10 prop, Hitec 5955 servos on all surfaces. I have only 1 on rudder and will be adding another soon. 2 Fromeco 5200 pacs on receiver and 1 2700 on Ignition. I am using the Fromeco Badger Switch for Ignition and Wolverine Switch for receiver. I will dig up some photos for you. This is a great plane, flies light and has unlimited vertical. Depending upon your altitude. Bruce

Jason: I have the same plane with a 3W 85xi in it. I have a ZDZ80RV that I installed in it when new, but I could not get it to balance with that engine. However, I did have a lot of weight in the back ( aluminum stab tube, two futabas 9153`s on rudder that are heavier than the standard servos) The plane only needs about 380 oz. of torque on the rudder to fly it with authority. So, if you only use one 8711 on the rudder you`ll be saving some weight and it will be easier to balance. Prepare to install all the gear that you can on the front in order to balance with the 80RV. It should be ballistic with that engine since it is almost 1 pound lighter that the 3Ws. My plane has insane power, the 3W-85 is turning a mejzlik 26x10 at 6850 rpms! The ZDZ has a little less power, but it does have enough to hover it at 1/2 throttle and it doesn`t vibrate as much as the 3W does. With the set up you have, you`ll love this plane. Just use one 8711 on rudder, you`ll be able to do knike edge loops with that servo back there. JM2C. John |

Have the same plane with the ZDZ super 80 and supersonic muffler. Just put the carbon fiber wing tube, stab tube, and main gear on it, weighs 21 lbs. Great flying plane. Used all Hitec servos. Everything purchased from TBM

I have this plane and it is a great performer!!!!!!!! That ZDZ80 is more than enough power!! I am running Hitec 5925's on Ailerons, Hitec 5985's on Elevators and TWO Hitec 5955's on Rudder now, with a ZDZ80 with pitts muffler for power with a 26x10 Mezjlik prop. I am also using carbon fiber wing tube, stab tube, and the SD carbon Fiber landing gear. Fromeco badger swithes with two 5200 packs for the rec and a 2600 pack for the ign. Sullivan Skywriter smoke system with a 32oz smoke and fuel tank(i put in the can tunnel). The three set backs i see are one the stock gear is weak, two the rudder needs two servos(it's bigger than most 35%ers), three the same as Lawn jockey said the pants are thin. Try to cut as little as possible on the cowl too that will help minimize cracking. I did not notice a balancing issue though? Later i also got the virtual cockpit man that looks really good!

I have the 33% SD Model's Yak and it flies great. ZDZ 80 RVJ, 8411's on the wings, Hitec 5985's on the elevators and an 8711 on the rudder with TBM 2600 Li-ion on the ignition and dual TBM 2600's for the Rx. I did have a little bit of balance issues in the beginning because it was pretty nose heavy so I have the batteries all the way up bext to the fuel tank now and that seems to balance out pretty well. Here is a video of mine with me flying to my freestyle music. http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...-yak-54-a.html Good luck with the build and I am sure you will have a lot of fun with the plane. Any of you guys that have/had the SD/AM/TOC# 33% Yak ever use only one servo per aileron? I have one of the ARC versions and I am about to cover the wing and thought I might just go with one Hitec HS5955 per wing. If you did do this mod did you just use the inboard or outboard servo mounting position or did you build a new servo bay in thre middle of the wing? Did you stiffen the ailerons at all by sheeting or whatever? Any issues with the aileron flexing with just one servo. I would like to go to one serrvo for weight savings as well as the ease of setup with just one. I mean 333oz should be enough for a plane this size. I woud think 666oz would just be overkill and an un-neccessary drain on the flight battery. Also contemplating mounting 2 x HS5955TG in the tail for rudder. Anyone done that? I am installing a DA 85 with JTEC oversized Pitts muffler and still deciding on a prop. Here is the colour scheme I am finishing mine in......
