I'm looking to get my son a new airframe for his JA 5.7 engine. He had it on an Aeroworks Edge 540 102" wingspan I believe. He has his heart set an an Extra 260. My question is what size should we be looking at? The 100cc size, or 75cc size? He doesn't fly much 3D, more IMAC than anything else. Any advise appreciated. Thanks |

100cc There are a number of good 260's around. Hanger9, Aeroworks, SD/Ace all come to mind. 50%

Sequence work can require a higher power to weight ratio than 3D- especially in upline manuevers- snaps more than anything. If my math is correct that is about a 93cc engine. I don't know much about how this engine runs and compares to a 100cc twin- but make sure that this isn't on the low end power wise for a 35% plane- maybe you can fill me on how it compares. I would feel comfortable saying that if you could get a plane at 24-25lbs or less you would be in good shape. If you are getting in the upper 20's then performance wouldl likely suffer. You might consider something in the 33pct range to be safe. Dave |

Lanier 35% Giles 202 kit. Perfect in-between kit size for any engine that is slightly less than 100cc , but more than an 80cc engine. The Giles 202 is IMHO the ultimate sequence plane. I haven't built or flown the Lanier, but I have flown several others. They "generally" have a very axial (neutral) roll and snap cleanly without balling up. I DO plan to build the Lanier some day. I have a nice 110cc Stihl cut-off saw engine for it. The kit is in the shop somewhere. Way up high in the rafters. Too many other projects right now. |
