Bob,
I have a 2.6 Yak 55 with a D.A. 100 with canister mufflers running a mejzlik 28x10 prop. Very quiet and allot of power, it will hover at about 1/4 throttle and pull out very nicely, great for 3-D.

I'm finishing mine up now. BME 115 and mufflers. An aquaintance had one and kept it real light. He said at the weight of his a 100cc engine was almost too much since it can only fly so fast before that big hole in front slows it down. Then again, he's so anal about weight he left the louvers off of his.

If you don't have noise issues at the fields you fly at there's no reason to use cans. They add cost, complexity, and weight. An engine with mufflers works just fine. The only place there may be an issue is at the bottom of the cowl ring where the muffler outlets may exit right at the junction of the cowl ring and the front of the fuselage. Makes for some tricky cuts in the cowl ring.

I have a lot of air time with these planes and have used two different set ups for the exhaust . I started out with some MTW TD75 cannisters , they are yery quiet and should 3D pretty well as they are very smooth and have lots of snap down low. I used the mtw for about 200 flights until I got sick of the lack of BIG top end .

I mostly fly IMAC and one day I got caught out @ a comp where there was bad weather (clod wind )combined with low power and a lack of skill . I decided I coild fix the power bit so I put on some K&S 1060 for the next comp . The plane was like night and day . I even got told to slow down by most of the judges .

I have also seen this set up on the BMB pipes and its was still a little off what my plane was doing .

Note My engine was a DA 100

Stu

Thanks guys.
I was beginning to think this plane isn't that popular or something.

How is it at 3D?

It's a pretty expensive plane, especially if you get the bright color ones. It's pretty popular in Australia for some reason. Over here we seem to be hung up on Yak 54's and Extras. The Extra's are said to be slightly more stable than Yaks in windy conditions but I believe a 54 is what the comparison was with.

The 55sp flies great, no worries. You won't need the extra power from tuned cans either. Dor Friedman did a 3d video with a 2.6 yak 55sp. I have it but can't upload it since it's a 69 meg file. Perhaps someone has a link to the video that would get you there. I believe it might have been an old ****** video.

I see this site does the same thing RCU does when you mention a name they don't like.
