I got the notice from CA today... its on the way! So, for those of you who have already gone through this.... any tips? I finished my first composite a few months ago... 100cc Extreme Composites Edge 540..... Its amazing how much better composites fly. |

The Yak came in today! Its actually a better looking plane than the pictures showed. The stab tube was crushed, probably at the factory, but other than that, its in great shape.

CompARF does a good job in the manual of explaining the hardware requirements, and I'm too lazy to do a proper build thread... but I'll certainly post about things I see, positive or negative, that will maybe help others in their build. With that said.. here's installment # 1 I always start with the simple stuff, elevator and aileron servos. I had to file out the servo holes in the stabs just a little, but other than that, it was a very normal install. I'm using 1 1/4 inch Airwild control arms on all surfaces, so I had to widen the servo arm holes a little also. In the stabs, the material is so thin that I just widened the slots with a knife blade. No need to get the dremel out and run the risk of scratching it up too much. One thing I did notice when putting the control horns in teh elevator.. one of the pre-cut slots was cut right over the top of one of the robard hinges. You usually have to deepen these slots just a little to get the horn seated in properly. On this plane, you have to deepen the slot, and I also cut down jusst a little on the width of the control horn where it inserts into the elevator. I had to get the dremel out here, and deepen the holes in the elevator. Especially where the robard hinge was in the way. 15 seconds worth of drilling was all it took. On to the ailerons... absolutely no problems here, very straightforward. You'll need a six inch cable extension on each servo. On the ailerons and elevators.... since I went with metal control arms, I'm using a ball link on the servo end of the control rod, but I stayed with he metal clevis going into the control arm. There's absolutely no slop in this connection, unlike some phoenolic horns I've used in the past. The stab tube I received from CompARF was crushed when I inspected the box, so there's another one on the way... I can't cut the holes in the fuse for the elevator servos until I get the tube in, so the tail of the plane will sit for a week or two. Last edited by reyn3545; 05-03-2008 at 10:41 AM. |

I think I'll start out with the metal tube. I have a 100cc Edge that shipped with a metal tube, I saved over 1/2 a pound when I went to carbon in it... but the metal tube in this plane is much smaller. I don't think I'd see a significant weight drop going to carbon. Plus, this tube is a perfect fit for the wings and tunnel in the fuse. When you order a carbon tube, you always have to either sand it to make it smaller or spray primer and clear finish on it to make it larger.... I'll just avoid that headache for now. I had a DA50 on a 19 pound plane and it would fly it OK. Not great, but OK. As long as this plane comes in somewhere in the 17's, it should be a great flyer. I've got a cub scout campout with my son tonight, and travelling most of next week, so it may be next weekend before I'm mixing glue again. Maybe the stab tube will be in by then. |

Does anyone know where a person can get a carbon wing tube for these..I looked on a couple sites but no one had the proper size.. I forget but i think it's either 30x790 or 32x790, not that the length matters but the diameter seems to be a problem. |

The book says its 30x790... I haven't looked, but you might try troybuiltmodels.com, or good old ebay. | ||||||||||||||||||
