Krill 28% Katana S build pictures

As jaguar bone was asking about pictures of my Katana I decided to put them in here for the world to see. Feel free to ask if there are any questions you have. I used the manual from Krill webpage for reference.

Fresh out of the box.


Supplied bits for the landing gear.


After little sanding of the landing gear I drilled the three mounting holes and installed the blindnuts.


The washers needed a bit of trimming to fit.


Tail wheel is straight forward.


Nothing surprising here.


On its legs for the first time.


Here we see it alongside the 33% Katana.

JR 8611a and 8711 for the 28% and 33% Katana + alu. horns.


The elevators were obviously not designed with the 8611a casing in mind.

After some dremeling.


Tape was used for drawing up the cutouts.


Servo installed with horn, I spent quite some time persuading the servo wires to go around the front of the servo tray but well worth it


One way I deviated from the kit way was on the control horns on the elevator and ailerons, I went with a ball link sandwiched between two horns, not single horn with balllink.


I also added blind nuts inside the fuselage to fasten the stabilizers. A must in my opinion as I'll be installing/removing them every time I go to the field.

Assembling the motor box was pretty straigh forward. Here you see the mounting holes for the standoffs, throttle, choke and fuel line.


The front end was opened up for cooling. Some baffling will most likely be installed.


Had to remove a small bit from the fuselage for the ignition cap but this angle on the motor gives the cleanest install with regards to cutout needed from the nose area.


Throttle and choke servo on a tray that was build for them.


Nice and tight gap.


MTW supplied the exhaust. They didn't have the 28% Katana measurement at that time but added it at no extra cost. Great service.


Little bracket with silicon tubing to hold the canister, I had to shorten the middle landing gear bolt so it wouldn't hit the exhaust. And of course the hole for the exhaust. It took some careful manuvering to get it all in there.


And here it is, a spring with a bit more of that silicon tubing holds it steady. Notice the offset caused by the side thrust.

After gluing the hinge blocks and hinges to the rudder post and cutting the hinge holes in the rudder I added a lot of tape to prepare it for gluing to the fuselage.


The Hysol takes around 24 hours to set so I tried to time all the major glue jobs at the end of every building session.


The next day this is what I had after removing the rudder, Hysol fillet was then added before gluing the rudder on along with some colour to blend the wood into the colour scheme.


Rudder tray made from aircraft plywood, notice the extra former made from Herex(I think Krill calls it) glued with Hysol and with a slot for the rudder cable.


As I was fresh out of rudder wire I used a red string to check the lines to the servo.


Hmmm, looks nice, I wonder if I can get a red wire


Bracket was made to mount the fuel tank on the wing tube(CG). I managed to fit 750 ml(about 25 oz) tank on top. You could fit a large one if for some reason you are going for endurance record in your Katana but you might have to build it yourself.

The mounting tabs were glued with Hysol, I also added blind nuts and bolts on the front end, accessible from the air intakes on either side of the spinner.


I measured the center of the hole in the wing where I have the servo wire and transfered that location to the fuselage and installed a rubber grommet there which the wire passes through.


Cooling slots in the making.


I'm not sure if they'll be enough so I might need some more. But we'll see when we get to that point.


And from the inside. I can add one more set of holes behind these.


I added this baffle to the lower half of the fuselage.


The canopy was masked on the outside.


And sprayed black, notice the peephole left so I can monitor the fuel status.


And here we are today, the canopy is glued to the frame and pretty much everything major is done.

And here we are today. That last picture was taken around 1700 yesterday.

As I took most of those pictures for my personal album I don't have pictures of every build step. Most notably the wing is missing but there is not much to see there any way. Just a servo hatch with the servo mounted to it. I'm waiting for a Weatronic kit I'll be installing in it and after that it can be balanced and flown.

Hysol is my new best friend and I can see myself building another composite later on

First Q.
How much of the wood inside the fuse was factory installed?

2. Fuel tank tray - your materials or furnished?

Okay before I burden you with a bunch of Q's that would be answered reading the manual- I'll just read the manual first - then come back to you!

Only wood I installed to the fuselage was the rudder post. I added the rudder tray support (half)former and of course I assembled the motor box. Fuel tank tray was made from my materials. Plywood that sits around half of the wing tube and balsa plate on top of that.

Just fire away, the manual could be better but it gets you started in the right direction.

Only one word truely describes this plane... WOW. I love the way this thing looks. Tell us how it flys for you. I've seen one video of a Krill 28%. It flew flawlessly. Keep up the good work!

That is way too cool. I like the light blue tint on the canopy! Are you going to run a DA 85 on its bigger brother?
