Default SD-Models 30% Yak Build - IMAC & 3D Ready(Hopefully)

I'm know this plane has been done a couple times, but I will do a build thread if there is interest. I am building this plane as a 3D/Freestyle airplane but it will be my IMAC bird to finish this season with while I am waiting for the Slick 540 to be released this winter. Set-up will be as follows:

CF Wing and Stab Tubes
CF Gear and Tailgear(both from graphtech)
DA-50 on tuned pipe(Not sure which one, think I might try the new MTW pipe)
Mejzlik prop
CF Spinner
Hitec 7955's all around
AR9100 Receiver
Fromeco Iron Corps Extreme Receiver Pack
Fromeco Iron Corps ignition pack
Fromeco Kodiak Switch(So I can fast charge from outside the plane)
Hitec 5625 on Throttle
Manual Choke
Smart-Fly Fiber-optic kill switch
Sullivan Sky-Lite Wheels
Microfastners.com Hardware
Planewrappers.com Plane Wrapper(in orange)
Wingtote Wing Bags

I think that covers it.... This plane is the orange/white/checker pattern. Hoping for an AUW of around 16lbs or less. Let me know if your interested in seeing it. I will post pics later tonight or tomorrow.

MAN bring it... build threads are always good. I mean you may choose gear differently than the last one, or install it in a different manner. The more good information on the site the better!

DO IT!

Alright Sleepy. But only because you changed your avitar.

I just ordered the fromeco package(with 2 kodiaks, figured I would use one for the ignition too but only because it puts a deans on the outside of the plane to high-amp charge through).

Ordered the CF Gear and Tubes.

Ordered the Plane Wrapper.

I'll order the engine and servo's at the beginning of next week. Any advice on pipes for the DA-50?!?

Oh I also forgot to mention the deadline. I need to get this plane ready for an IMAC contest at the end of August. so I would really like to see it finished by the 22nd so I can get some trim flights on it before the contest on the 30th. Shouldn't be an issue. The fridge is stocked with beer.

Alrighty, got started on it tonight. One of my goals with this build is to make it as low maintenance as possible. I fought the covering on my last plane quite a bit, so I decided to take some extra measures and time on this one to see if I can make it as maintenance free as possible.

I start with the covering iron and a hot sock and go over every square inch of the surfaces. I really don't like to use the heat gun if I don't have to because it tends to pull the trim and doesn't help it stick down much.

After I'm done with that, I decided to try a trick I learned from Lance this last weekend and take clear fingernail polish over all the edges I think would need it. This worked GREAT! Barely visible, and I tried to pull up a couple edges with an xacto knife and it really holds em down. I did all of the corners of the checkers and pretty much all of leading and trailing edges. Tonight I got the stabs/elevators and rudder done. Next couple of days I'll get the wings done and then the fuse. After that I will hinge them. I think on this build I am going to try gorilla glue on the hinges...

Thanks for the nailpolish tip! I was just thinking what I was going to use to stick down the edges of the covering on my new yak55SP.

No problem. Like I said, it is visible, but you have to be looking for it. Much better then trying to get thin ca on the edges though. You can see the nail polish if you are holding the piece up close, but if it is laying on the table and you are standing up you can not see it.

Alright, got the wings tightened up and nail polish on last night. Just got to get the fuse done and it will be hinging time. I took a good look at the stock hinges yesterday, and I think they got to go. They look pretty cheap and are VERY flexible for a hinge.

Looks like I am also going to get a matching no limitz pilot. Should be pretty cool.

Got the wing/stab tubes and gear... It's looking good.

I also got the plane wrapper. Wow is all I can say. These things are awesome and the orange looks great! I'll get pictures later.

Picked up all the servo's and the programmer... so next week I'll get going on the hinging and aileron set-up!
