Default Lanier 1/3 extra 300 kit

A Friend of mine has a Lanier extra 300 kit that he was going to build a couple years ago. He said he doesn't want to anymore and told me I can have it. He won't take any money from me and if I take it I have to build it. Is this a decent airplane?

For free, I think it's a great airplane! I do remember seeing one for sale somewhere that had some mods done to it and it supposedly did real well at the high alpha stuff.

take it man...it's a great plane if you will build it light......you will probably have to find as many possible ways to make it lighter, but still have the same structural integritiy. It is made for f3a..or imac.....it can be 3d capable if you do some mods to it........but all in all i gotta say linear builds some of the toughest planes, but they weight to much.......so just do your homework on it and it'll be a nice plane

yeah...keeping it light is key. Their was one built locally about 7 or 8 years ago. It was very heavy and it had a 4.2 magneto style Sachs...didn't have enough power to hover and it wouldn't even hold knife edge. But, if you kept it light and threw a hot 80cc single or a hot 100cc twin in it, you'd have a nice bird.

For the mods:

1. Like everyone else said, keep it light.

2. Enlarge all of the control surfaces

3. Double bevel the control surfaces.

The one I flew was a pretty good flying airplane, but it didn't have alot of control authority. That made hovering almost impossible, but it was rock solid in a TR once you got it in there.

Cool thanks guys. Now I have to decide whether to jump from my h9 27% 260 straight to 33%. I was flying the a guys 33% h9 sukhoi today and it was sweet. I was going to build a 83" 50cc su 26 but another Friend told me I would be better off going straight to 33%. I want to get into the 33-35% planes so maybe he is right as I don't have any gas motors at the moment.

the bigger the better.........i would go ahead and jump from the 27%- 33%. I've seen people jump from 60 size to 40% man. Believe me the bigger the better. the fly so smooth and take on wind like it never existed

Dido.... The bigger the better. There are alot of 33% airplanes out there that will take a 100CC engine just fine. But, if you're going to go ahead and put a 100CC engine on a 33%, you might as well go ahead and get a 35%.

The price is right on the kit. What size of engine would be good for this plane.I would love the bme 110 but if this is a heavy plane I guess a motor that light would make it a bitch to balance the plane

I've got a good buddy that built one last year for 3D. He lightened it, enlarged all the control surfaces, and moved the hinge lines. It's got a BME 110 on it JR 8611's all around and it's an animal !!!! Lanier built 'em strong but u've got to lighten it up. I've flown it a couple of times and loved it !!! It will fly any 3D mission you send it on and still fly flawless pattern on low rates !!!

I was looking at the plans and could not believe how small the control surfaces are on the tail

I guess I'll be making some new stabs
