Help! Aeroworks 100cc Yak 54 landing gear

I will start off by saying that I do love this plane. But I am having a problem with the landing gear. After any nice smooth landing, whenever I try to turn the plane the wheels will start skipping. This happens when the plane has a little bit of speed. This is very hard to explane. But it is a problem. I am using the gear and the wheels that came with the plane. And when this happens it bends the landing gear. I have had to repair the gear mounting block three times now. And it also damages the landing gear cover. I now have to buy a new one of those. I hope someone out there can offer some good advice. I have been flying giant scale planes for a while and this is the first time I have ever had this happen.

I would like to help but your going to have to come up with a better description than the wheels are skipping?? Then the gear is bent? Please give us more details. Is it bouncing alot? Are the wheels trying to lock up when your turning?

I have had the same problem. The gear plate has come out for me also. I have been flying this plane for 2 years and fixed the gear with a TNT gear. Tried the carbon fiber gear and it wasn't any better than the one that comes with the plane.TNT is a little heaver but does not flex like the one that comes with the plane. This is the only thing that I found bad with the plane. I hope they have fixed the gear plat on the new Yaks.

jdearduff - I assume you fly off asphalt. If so, you could change out the wheels to a Kavan type which slide better on asphalt. The stock foam wheels almost stick to asphalt, especially if you carry any speed. Second, if you are having to turn the plane at higher speeds, sounds like you are coming in too hot, or have a really short runway. You can practically land that thing at a walking pace. Third, your gear may be bent causing the wheels to skip. Not sure what else to recommend without more detail or a video of the problem.

Unhappy Re: Aeroworks 100cc Yak 54 landing gear

I have a the plane one of the older versions and what i did was to put triangle stock where the gear meets the fuse sides . The newer versions have this done allready i have heard but like the previous posts said this bird will come in at a walking speed . I land both on grass and a 350 foot blacktop runway and have never had any issues with over 50 or so flights . I have stock gear and tires but i did notice that the stock wheels and tires are soft and you might want to replace them with a different type.

Dough Boy knows what I am talking about. Even when you land at really slow speeds it almost needs to be at a dead stop before you atempt to turn the plane. Very frustrating. I think the gear is just to long for the type of aluminum that is made out of.

Interesting. I have never seen that happen and there are quite a few guys I fly with that have them. The 7075 aluminum is quality stuff. TNT gear is made from 6061 T6 aluminum, which is generally a lower grade aluminum than 7075. But it does look like TNT makes two types of gear for the Yak, 3/16 and 1/4 inch thickness. Maybe the 1/4 gear is your fix.

Did the TNT gear fix your problem Dough Boy?

This is why I will never own another aeroworks. They need to bolt the gear with aluminum to the main frames, problem solved.

That's really not the issue, at least with the recent productions. All of the gear plates are now reinforced with aluminum brackets. So you are missing out!

This is not a Aeroworks bash thread. I love this plane, but this one thing is a problem for me. Just want some ideas.

I have this plane and have had the same skippping problem, second flight greesed landing and when turning it hopped up and broke the gear block . I repaired the block put a wire between the landing gear just below the fuse (helps stop the gear from spreading) and pitched the foam wheels and used Dubro wheels on it. The supplied wheels seem to cause some of the problem. Have had no other problems since.

Bag the stock wheels/tires and get yourself a set of Kavans. They will slide/drift instead of side loading. Gotta be careful though because you can break the hubs on your new Kavans. I'd rather blow a hub than bend/break gear. I use em to the point of wearing out. I have a very short field and have had to slam my plane into a "hockey stop" to avoid going off in the rough with no problems.
