Default How do you transport your big ships

With the increased size of airframe available it makes transporting them more difficult. So how do you get your ships to the field. My little Mitsubishi Outlander has only 2" to spare to fit my 1/4 scale yak fuse in the rear. It would never fit a 50cc ship. So do I need to get a new larger car just to fly a 50cc airframe? A freind has a huge GMC deisel truck with the long bed and his 40% ultimate stick out the rear of the canopy.

I have a Avalanche. A 40% fits with the tailgate closed.

Mine is on a sheet of ply, strapped down, and then slid in the back of my truck with tailgate open. It still sticks WAY out, straps hold the ply in the truck, its a big PITA. even in the trailer a friend has, with other planes, its just too big.

Nothing at all wrong with a soccor Mom van, or a small trailer. A long bed pick up handles a 35% plane just fine,

Here is what I had done a few years ago, a small car can easily towe this trailer I made.

Today I use a large trailer but then it fit the bill.

Here is what I use for my 30%. These photos show the 30% yak I was flying. It holds my 3Dhobby shop Extra 300SHP but I do have to pull the stabs off to get it to fit. The riser allows for storage under the plane for smaller planes or gear. The first photo shows the van loaded for the Joe Nall last year. This is a regular sized Caravan. A Grand Caravan would hold larger planes without a problem.

The riser can be removed in about 5 minutes. It makes it real versatile.

Of course if you really are determined, a 30% can fit in a small car with a little work.

I used to have an Avalanche and a Trailer. When gas went over $4/Gal. I got rid of both of them. The Avalanche was my daily driver so I replaced it with a Mini CooperS. I know - but at least is ain't a Miata. Besides, I am married and my wife is hot so who cares if people question my manhood. On top of that, the Cooper has a supercharger, is FAST and a blast to drive. I really miss my Avalanche though.

For hauling planes, I picked up a 1999 Chevy Express 3500 Extended Cargo van for $3K. It tows 10,000lbs with ease and has PLENTY of room for planes. The back has no windows and the whole thing is white. At the Nats last year, it was HOT outside. I went to get something out of the van. When I opened it, I noticed that it was easily 10-20 degrees COOLER inside the van. I expected it to be boiling hot like any other vehicle. I guess without windows and white paint, it is pretty well insulated against the summer heat. I leave the planes in there a lot and have not had any problems. Mine is set up for 2 - 40% and there is a lot of room left over. I have seen a similar set up with 3 - 40% planes in there.

I'm planning on building a 40% plane and I'll either get a trailer (gonna be a V-nose if I do) or make the rudder removable and leave the tailgate down. I like the idea of a cargo van though, just hate to have another vehicle to tote airplanes around with. I've seen other people do it though.
