Help! H9 35% extra 260....wing failure...

I actually posted this onto an existing "build thread" on here for this ARF but thought I would also start a new thread hoping to get some input.

I just had to jump in here and comment. I bought a used RTF one of these a few weeks ago on another site. I knew about the wing failures on the some of the first released ones of these. The seller assured me his had been "flown and tested" thoroughly. WELL....on my second flight doing some mid-throttle snaps I heard the "crack/pop" of a wing failing. I landed and sure enough many of the ribs had broken and the sheeting buckled on my right wing. Pieces fell out of the wing like confetti. I knew I should have steered clear of this plane....

I was suprised to see in this forum that the "wing problem" still may be an issue on more recently released ones. Do any of you guys know if and how Horizon is dealing with failures at this time?. I know when this ARF came out a few years ago they were either replacing wings and/or supplying "reinforcing kits". Because i am the second owner i am not too optimistic about getting anything out of them.

I see A replacement wing half is $355 ....lol....what a JOKE!!!!! Thats insane! I am a builder but also have some ARFS as my "regular flyers". I'll peel the sheeting off the bottoms of my wings and put some "real wood and glue" in there before spending that kind of money on a wing HALF that may or may not be strong enough for the job. I am not Bashing H9.... one of my main flyers the past three years has been their 33% extra 330s....great plane...no problems!

just had to "vent" and am hoping somebody may have some thoughts on how to, and if i have any chance when I call Horizon to "gripe".

Thanks,
Steve

As far as I know, the wing issue has not been a problem with newer planes. Just call Horizon and let them know. The call is free and they are the only ones who can help you.

From speaking with a product support rep he stated that not all wings were found to be needing more glue. The wings that were going to fail normally failed within about the first 10-15 flights. The plane that you got might have had more flights than that and it was thought that the wings were OK, although now it appears that they were not. He might not have loaded up the plane with a lot of force.

Before you get all upset about the plane go ahead and contact Horizon Hobby's product support and explain the situation. Horizon's product support is about the best in the business.

You'll love the plane. I own one and its a blast to fly.

Well....Through additional mails with the original owner I am finding out that the plane had been flown a fair amount but only "pretty mildly"....not too much if any extreme stress stuff.... I have heard that Horizons Cust. service is good....I'll give it a shot. If nothing else I'll fix the wings I have and get it back in the air....

I would have to say that attitude when having an issue is just as important about being right or wrong. If you call up saying bla bla bla fix my crap bla bla bla you'll get nowhere. There are also limits to warranties. You might have an issue with being the second owner, then again you may not because this is a known issue.

I have a right wing panel that is in serviceable condition. It does have a couple ribs that need to be glued and the spar gluing mod needs to be done to it, but I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping and packing materials if you want it. Might take a little while for me to find the time to pack it up though.

Why do people come on here and start threads whining about some product that let them down before they even try and contact the manufacturer? Give them a chance to help you.

When I bought my plane I was aware of the issue and my LHS provided me with a spare set of wings that had the "corrected" spar gluing.

I took a flashlight and shone through the wing tube socket so I could see the glue joint, and just as suspected, very little glue (applied very sparingly and in the wrong places)

I went ahead and did the wing fix as recommended on their product page and my plane has almost 40, zero-issue flights. Crazy snap rolls and blenders have done nothing to hurt the wings. Its not a stress/strength issue, its about keeping the wing tube socket in the right places so the structure can provide the necessary strength.....just do the fix and go have some fun, this plane is a true joy to fly !
